Junior broadcaster receives Silver Dome nomination

Ryan Pier ’11, sports director for WONC-FM 89.1, received a nomination for Best Sportscaster (in a small market) from the Illinois Broadcasters Association (IBA) and is one of three vying for this Silver Dome Award. His competition includes sports reporters from two commercial stations: WKAN in Kankakee and WRMJ in Aledo. Piers produced a sports story that aired on WONC featuring the basketball prowess of the Raridon family. He will attend the IBA awards ceremony June 16 in Normal, Ill., where he’ll learn the winner.

Ryan Piers ’11 heads to Uganda to research crisis journalism

Broadcast communication major Ryan Piers ’11 will be traveling to Uganda March 13-27 to conduct research, funded by a Richter grant, for his project titled “Susan D. Moeller’s ‘Compassion Fatigue’ Preventing Journalism Methods and How They Were Applied When Reporting on the LRA.” Piers will be based in Kampala, Uganda’s capital, and staying in a house run by the Catholic Diocese. His research will involve interviewing local and international journalists, asking questions that test whether or not they used the proposed methods of “good crisis journalism” talked about in Susan D.

WONC staffers named finalist in national and state competitions

Several WONC-FM 89.1 staff members were named national finalists in three categories by the College Broadcasters Inc. (CBI) National Student Production Awards, an annual competition for college and university radio stations. Winners will be announced Oct. 31 at the National College Media Convention in Austin, Texas.
