The campus community is invited to join Stephen Maynard Caliendo, professor of political science, and his IDS 125 Music & Politics seminar for a special appearance by Chicago-based hip-hop recording artist FM Supreme from 2 to 3:45 p.m. Thursday, April 28, in Koten Chapel. The free event will feature a conversation between FM Supreme and Caliendo that will include her thoughts about women in hip-hop, the importance of education, the influence of spirituality in her music and life, and the ways music can be an agent for social change. There will be a Q&A and performance.

Stephen Maynard Caliendo, professor of political science, will give an author talk and sign copies of his new book, “Race Appeal: How Candidates Invoke Race in U.S. Political Campaigns,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 31, at Anderson’s Two Doors East, 111 E. Jefferson Ave. He and co-author Charles McIlwain will share their findings and lead a discussion.

Stephen Maynard Caliendo, associate professor of political science, was a featured speaker at the annual meeting of the Central States Communication Association (CSCA) in Cincinnati, Ohio, April 14-18. He presented “(Far) Beyond the Classroom: A Broad Pedagogy for Race and Communication” in a Spotlight Session sponsored by the Intercultural Division of CSCA.

Stephen Maynard Caliendo, associate professor of political science, was a co-presenter with co-author Charlton McIlwain of New York University at the Transforming Race Conference sponsored by the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at The Ohio State University on March 12. They were featured presenters on a panel, “New Media: Unexpected Pathways to Empowerment,” and discussed the ways they use Facebook, Twitter and blogging to encourage meaningful discussion of race and politics through their work at The Project on Race in Political Communication.

Students from North Central’s Mock Trial team advanced to national competition by finishing tied for the third-best record (5-1-2) in the 20-team field at the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA) Joliet Regional competition Feb. 20-21 at Lewis University.
