The CCIW head baseball coaches voted North Central’s head coach John Fitzgerald as the 2010 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Baseball Coach of the Year. His third year of coaching for the Cardinals, Fitzgerald led his team to an overall record of 31-11 and won the CCIW title with an in-conference record of 17-4. More

Diane Anstine—associate professor and chair of economics, Ruge Fellow and Faculty Athletic Representative—was selected as a 2010 NCAA Division III Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR) Fellow and will be attending the Division III FAR Fellows Institute in October. She was selected from more than 450 FARs in Division III schools nationwide. Anstine was nominated by CCIW’s commissioner because of her work at North Central and its faculty mentor program and her leadership and work within the conference and NCAA.

The College recognized Peter Barger and Cheryl Horton at its annual Service Awards celebration May 21 as recipients of the Ruth C. Dissinger Awards for administrative manager and administrative support staff, respectively. As coordinator of North Central’s 2010 Institutional Self-Study, in addition to his roles as director of institutional assessment and accreditation, dean of graduate and continuing education and professor of economics and finance, Barger fit the criteria for this award, going above and beyond job expectations in support of the College.

David Gray, assistant professor of accounting, and Gerald Hamsmith, professor of accounting emeritus, had their case study titled “Divisional Concerns at Patterson’s Fine Chocolates” published in the 2009 edition of Annual Advances in Business Cases. This journal is published by the Society for Case Research, which exists to promote the development of materials and methods for case-based instruction. Kept a secret till the end of Honors Convocation May 18, President Wilde announced Sunbir Gill as the Outstanding Senior Man. “Sunny” has been a familiar face and respected leader on campus since his freshman year. He served as president of Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) his senior year and his strong work ethic and hands-on approach to leading have been instrumental in opening the SIFE store and leading his team to the national championships for two years.

Laurel White was named the 2010 Outstanding Senior Woman. Earlier during Honors Convocation, she was also recognized as the Outstanding Student in the Arts & Letters Division and Outstanding Student in English and received the Megan Sweeney Award for achieving the highest level of academic excellence. A College Scholar, White will graduate with a double major in English writing and interactive media studies and a minor in social change/public advocacy. Seniors choose Susan Mack to give Last Lecture

North Central seniors voted to invite Susan Mack, visiting instructor of education, to present the CUAB-hosted Last Lecture to students at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 20, in Meiley-Swallow Hall. The entire campus community is invited. Her talk is titled “The Education of a Person: A Curricular Narrative.” Mack is a 1968 graduate of North Central College and has been a member of its faculty since 2005.

Four students recently met two U.S. Supreme Court justices—Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia M. Sotomayor—in Washington, D.C., as part of the students’ interdisciplinary research about oral arguments presented before the court. All sophomores, Garrett Lutz is a musical theatre major; Erin Martin, an English literature major; Madeline Moton, a philosophy and political science major; and Stewart Charles, an economics and finance major.
