Winning three events and scoring in three more, the North Central College men's track & field team was crowned National Champions on March 13 with its first Indoor National Title since 1989, besting a field of more than 65 institutions. Broadcast communication major Ryan Piers ’11 will be traveling to Uganda March 13-27 to conduct research, funded by a Richter grant, for his project titled “Susan D. Moeller’s ‘Compassion Fatigue’ Preventing Journalism Methods and How They Were Applied When Reporting on the LRA.” Piers will be based in Kampala, Uganda’s capital, and staying in a house run by the Catholic Diocese. His research will involve interviewing local and international journalists, asking questions that test whether or not they used the proposed methods of “good crisis journalism” talked about in Susan D.

Presenting academic work at an international convention in St. Louis is how one student will spend her spring break. Sarah Kurpiel ’10, majoring in English literature and French, will present her paper titled “Where’s Antonio Then?: Locating the Inclusions and Exclusions of Antonio in Two Film Versions of Twelfth Night” at the Sigma Tau Delta 2010 International Convention in St. Louis March 17-20.

The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released its 2010 Men’s Indoor Track & Field Midwest Region Award winners March 10 with three of the four award winners from North Central. Heading into the last week of classes and finals, students are letting off some steam playing in the Winter Intramural Championship games. After six weeks of regular season play, teams competing in basketball, speedball, soccer and volleyball moved on to single-elimination playoffs for their respective sport. Those teams that advanced on to the finals are competing this week for campus bragging rights. Held in Merner Field House, four tournaments are yet to play, March 9-11.

A delegation from The New American Colleges & Universities (NAC&U) will be on campus Wednesday and Thursday, March 10-11, to assess North Central’s student affairs programs. The evaluators are administrators from various NAC&U schools who are in Chicago this week for a Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA) conference.

Heading into NCAA Division III Indoor Championships this weekend March 12-13, North Central's men’s track and field took over as the nation’s No. 1 team for the first time. The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) made the announcement March 8 in its latest indoor track & field national team rankings for NCAA Division III. The Cardinals led the national field with 12 entries.
