North Central’s theatre faculty and an alumna and student will be part of the Feb. 11-12 multimedia program “Heroic and Hopeful” presented by the DuPage Symphony Orchestra in Wentz Concert Hall.

The second part of the DSO program features Peter Boyer’s “Ellis Island: The Dream of America,” an original composition with historical imagery and spoken word from the Ellis Island Oral History Project.

Students in North Central’s chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA) will be selling handmade jewelry and crafts Feb. 7 and 9 as a fundraising effort. Each quality piece of jewelry and craft items is created by women who have been rescued from Thailand’s red light district by The Well and its nonprofit organization Servantworks. The handcrafted items make great Valentine’s Day gifts.

Upon arriving at North Central College in 1970, Bev Thornburg took over the responsibilities of head tennis coach and instructor of physical education. At the time, these were the only athletic opportunities for women on campus and she wasted no time in changing this. In a span from 1971 to 1975, Thornburg pioneered the way for women's volleyball, basketball and softball while coaching all three sports at the same time.

Each February, North Central College celebrates National Girls and Women in Sport Day with a luncheon and presentation of the Cleo Tanner Award. This year's luncheon takes place at noon Tuesday, Jan. 31, in the Harold and Eva White Activities Center, where Bev Thornburg will be honored as the 2012 Cleo Tanner Award recipient for her positive effect on women's athletics at North Central. Students, faculty and staff are invited to walk in and attend the free event.

As North Central College focuses on the theme for this year’s MLK Week—“Where do we go from here?”—the campus community is invited to respond to that question by helping those in need in our community.

Throughout Martin Luther King Jr. Week, Jan. 16-20, the College will be collecting gently used winter clothes. The clothes will be donated to the People’s Resource Center in Wheaton as a part of its Clothes Connection program which provides free clothing to needy families and individuals in DuPage County.

North Central College welcomes Tavis Smiley as keynote speaker for its annual weeklong celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The talk show host, political commentator and entrepreneur will present the multimedia presentation “America I AM: The African American Imprint” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, in Pfeiffer Hall.

Although free to students, faculty and staff, tickets need to be reserved. Visit or call the box office at 630-637-7469.
