With the unveiling of a new history book about the College—“North Central College: 150 Years. A Promising Start.”—the campus community will have multiple opportunities during the weekend-long Sesquicentennial and Homecoming Celebrations to hear from the authors, purchase the book and have the authors sign copies.

Herman Julius Kiekhoefer was born in northern Germany and emigrated with his family to the United States as a child, settling in Wisconsin in 1862. He entered Galesville University and graduated in 1872.

The second president of North Central College, Henry H. Rassweiler, was born in Orwigsburg, Pa., in 1842. In 1857, his family left Pennsylvania for Illinois, where Rassweiler began his teaching career at age 17.

He enrolled at Plainfield College in 1862 and continued to teach grammar school while pursuing his studies until he graduated in 1868 as the first student with a bachelor of science degree. Immediately after his graduation from North-Western College, he was appointed professor of mathematics and natural science.

The exhibit, “150 Years: A Promising Start” at Naper Settlement’s Heritage Gallery echoes the theme of the College’s Sesquicentennial celebration. Throughout the exhibition—which runs through mid-June 2012 at Naper Settlement’s Pre-Emption House Visitor Center, 523 S. Webster St.—admission will be free to all North Central College students, faculty, staff and alumni.

North Central College’s marketing and communications staff utilize various media—from Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Flickr to postings on multiple online sites—to communicate College news. An additional communication resource is a new blog the College maintains at NapervillePatch.com, the local voice for Patch.com, which is a national network of hyperlocal sites that covers community life in towns across America.
