For the past six weeks, 37 students and 15 faculty have participated in the Summer Undergraduate Research Colloquium (SURC) conducting research that spans many majors and topics. Students presented their research to the campus community July 21 in a poster format in Kroehler Science Center. Nancy Peterson, professor of chemistry, noted research can be lonely and slow-going at times, so students and faculty involved in SURC meet weekly to collaborate and discuss their work.

During the Service Awards event May 21, Bill Muck and Heather Coon were named recipients of the Clarence F. Dissinger Award for Junior Faculty and Senior Faculty, respectively. The awards recognize two faculty for their distinguished teaching, leadership and service to the College “above and beyond the call of duty.” Muck joined the faculty in 2008 and is assistant professor of political science.

Kept a secret till the end of Honors Convocation May 18, President Wilde announced Sunbir Gill as the Outstanding Senior Man. “Sunny” has been a familiar face and respected leader on campus since his freshman year. He served as president of Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) his senior year and his strong work ethic and hands-on approach to leading have been instrumental in opening the SIFE store and leading his team to the national championships for two years.

Daniel VanHorn, assistant professor psychology, and Karl Kelley, professor of psychology, gave addresses April 30 as part of the Psi Chi Symposium at the 2010 Midwestern Psychological Association annual meeting April 29-May 1 in Chicago. VanHorn’s address was titled “Tips for Getting Into Graduate School” and Kelley’s talk was titled “Finding Employment With an Undergraduate Degree in Psychology.”

Thomas Sawyer, professor of psychology, collaborated with three students and one alumna to give two poster presentations at the 82nd annual meeting of the Midwestern Psychological Association in Chicago April 29-May 1. One presentation, co-authored with psychology majors Jennifer John ’10 and Mike O'Connor ’11, was titled, “Facial Masculinity Effects on Competitiveness Judgments.” The second was co-authored with alumna Allison Shostrom ’09, a psychology graduate student at Roosevelt University, and Brandi Balensiefen ’11 and was titled, “Blaming the Bottle: Responsibility/B
