Some 150 people, including faculty, students, alumni and friends from the community, gathered Jan. 28 to hold a fundraiser in honor of Lora L. Tyson, former North Central College associate professor of education from 1999 to 2008.

Held at Naperville’s Brunswick Zone XL, the inaugural Snow Bowl included bowling, a billiards tournament and silent auction to raise funds to support and renovate the Dr. Lora L. Tyson Education Curriculum Resource Center.

Renard Jackson (photo), assistant professor of education, and Jack Shindler, professor of English and director of international programs, participated in the Scholarship of Pedagogy Symposium sponsored by the Associated Colleges of the Chicago Area (ACCA). Hosted by Dominican University on Oct. 30, the conference was titled Connecting the Dots: Helping Students Integrate Learning Across Contexts.

Recent graduate and elementary education major Jill Bushman ’10 was featured in The Beacon-News Aug. 24 on her first day of teaching 29 fourth-grade students at Aurora’s Oak Park Elementary School. Throughout her four years at North Central, Bushman was involved in Junior/Senior Scholars as a tutor, mentor, team leader and summer intern.

Ann Durkin Keating, Dr. C. Frederick Toenniges Professor of History, and Mary Kay Hyett, office manager, Office of Community Development, will be inducted to the Naperville Heritage Society’s Heritage Hall of Honor Sunday, Aug. 1, at 2 p.m. at Naper Settlement. The yearly recognition honors people and organizations that have made significant contributions to preserving the history of Naperville. Keating will be recognized for her historical contributions.

Susan Mack, visiting instructor of education, and new graduates Sandy Moller ’10 and Jessica Mateo ’10 were co-presenters of a workshop titled “Preparing Teachers for Diversity in Classroom Management” at ACI’s Center for Success in High-Need Schools Summer Institute for Educators on June 18 at Trinity Christian College. Moller was the 2010 Outstanding Major in Spanish at North Central’s 2010 Honors Convocation and Mateo graduated with a degree in elementary education.

North Central seniors voted to invite Susan Mack, visiting instructor of education, to present the CUAB-hosted Last Lecture to students at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 20, in Meiley-Swallow Hall. The entire campus community is invited. Her talk is titled “The Education of a Person: A Curricular Narrative.” Mack is a 1968 graduate of North Central College and has been a member of its faculty since 2005.
