Teach First alumni share expertise with first-generation future teachers

North Central College hosts its first annual Teach First Alumni Academy with 55 current Teach First students and eight Teach First Alumni Mentors participating.

North Central College hosted its first annual Teach First Alumni Academy on Feb. 20 with 55 current Teach First students and eight Teach First Alumni Mentors participating. The mentors, who were first-generation college students at North Central and now are full-time teachers, prepared and facilitated interactive professional development workshops.

Julie Carballo, North Central College director of First Generation Programs and Teach First, was a presenter at the Council of Independent Colleges(CIC)/Walmart Foundation Symposium on First-Generation College Students held July 7-9 in Baltimore.

Several North Central College faculty presented and coordinated the Associated Colleges of Illinois Summer Institute for Educators June 27.

North Central College hosted the Associated Colleges of Illinois (ACI) Summer Institute for Educators held June 27. North Central’s Jan Fitzsimmons, executive director of Urban Education Laboratory, coordinated the event and several of the College’s faculty presented sessions on various topics.   

Mary McMahon, associate professor of mathematics and mathematics education coordinator, copresented a session titled “Lesson Study: A Mathematics Tool for Teacher Collaboration in the Midst of the Common Core Standards.”

Carballo promotes Teach First program at school, conference

Julie Carballo, North Central College adjunct instructor of education and director of Teach First, gave a talk about the Teach First program to the Future Educators Association at West Aurora High School on April 17. She has also given presentations to the National Honor Society and Future Educators of America groups at East Aurora High School.
