Ibero-American Film Festival features six films

Fusión Española, North Central College’s Spanish Club, will host the Ibero-American Film Festival, featuring cultural enrichment, May 2-3 and 7-10.

Fusión Española, North Central College’s Spanish Club, will host the Ibero-American Film Festival, featuring the screening of six films for cultural enrichment of Spanish studies. Admission is free to all six events, held in the theatre at Meiley-Swallow Hall from May 2 through May 10.

An opening reception with complimentary refreshments and information about the films will take place at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, prior to the first film. The films are spoken in Spanish but have English subtitles. Following is the lineup for the festival:

North Central College senior Jenna Slack presents research at national conference that supports using mediation to resolve immigration conflict, direct policy.

Senior Jenna Slack from Carol Stream, Ill., is among 45 students from North Central College whose research project was accepted for presentation at a leading national conference on undergraduate research.

Her research topic—using mediation to examine and resolve illegal migration issues—evolved after a study abroad experience her sophomore year led to subsequent volunteer work.

Experience Spanish culture during annual Flamenco Festival

During February, North Central College hosts its annual Flamenco Festival, featuring rhythmic music, dance, films and photography from Spanish culture.

During the month of February, North Central College will host the fifth annual Flamenco Festival that showcases the emotive, rhythmic music and dance from Spanish culture. Several events are planned—including dance classes, films, a lecture and photography exhibit. All are open to the public and most are free.

North Central alumni, students hone skills as they lead and teach at summer camp

For the first time, North Central alumnae co-direct the Junior/Senior Scholars summer camp, a college readiness program that partners with high-need schools.

July 21, 2011—For the first time, North Central alumnae served as co-directors of the Junior/Senior Scholars summer camp, a college readiness program that partners with high-need elementary and secondary schools in Aurora and Chicago. Program Coordinator Jan Fitzsimmons recruited Cherrelle Blevins ’09 and Jill Bushman ’10 to serve as co-directors, along with four North Central alumni as coaches and 17 students as interns for the 2011 five-week summer program.

Kevin Stahr '99

Kevin Stahr is the public information coordinator for the City of Aurora, IL. He’s responsible for writing news releases, fielding media inquiries, coordinating special events and helping develop various media strategies. Stahr had spent the last 11 years with Suburban Life Newspapers as a reporter and news editor. He lives in Aurora with his wife Toni Drost ’99 Stahr.

Valla Coffman '02 Aguilar

Valla Coffman Aguilar is director of marketing for the Office of Marketing and Communications at North Central College where she also spent three years as assistant director of admission/marketing coordinator. She has served the last three years as senior marketing communications specialist with Dental Network of America in Oakbrook Terrace, IL.

First Latin Music Festival features tapas and music Nov. 11

The Spanish club Fusión Española presents the beautiful sounds of Peru, Brazil and Spain and serves up tasty tapas for its annual Latin Music Festival Nov. 11.

The Spanish club Fusión Española incorporates the beautiful sounds of Peru, Brazil and Spain during its first annual Latin Music Festival, noon to 2 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 11, in the theatre at Meiley-Swallow Hall. The festival is designed to foster an understanding and appreciation of Spanish and Hispanic-American cultures. Tapas will be served at 11:30 a.m. and performances by three musical groups will begin at noon. The festival is free; guests are welcome to come and go as they wish.
