The Changing Face of Science Education

Jeffrey Bjorklund, professor of chemistry, has been helping oversee the design of the new science center, ensuring the building will meet the needs of students and faculty for generations to come. Here he discusses the changing nature of science education and its influence on the teaching and researching spaces in the facility.

Q. We know science is taught differently now than it was a few decades ago. How has that affected the day-to-day experience of students and faculty?

New facility enables the sciences to collaborate, teach & research

Schematic designs are nearly complete for a premier science facility that will combine all the departments of the Science Division and transform the entire campus. The floor plans reflect the thoughtful input—and long-held dreams—of faculty who envision how they will teach in the future and address the need for graduates with STEM educations. 

North Central College announces site selection for new science center

The North Central College Board of Trustees has selected a location for a new science center.

During its annual fall meeting the North Central College Board of Trustees selected a location for a new science center that will create exciting new educational opportunities for students and transform the campus.

After careful consideration the Board has determined that the new science center will be located south of Van Buren Avenue between Loomis and Brainard streets, within the boundaries of the College and University District designated by the City of Naperville.

North Central College maps potential sites for new Science Center

This summer, the Naperville City Council approved a 10-year update to the College’s Master Land Use Plan.

Topping the list of potential projects that city staff, council members and the public reviewed is a new $40 million to $50 million science center that would replace Kroehler Science Center. The structure would be designed to foster a more interdisciplinary approach to teaching sciences, and the teaching facilities would be built to integrate classroom lectures and lab activities in the same space.
