Student wins top honors and tuition prize to law school

North Central College political science major Jennifer Rieger ’13 won second-place honors at contest and tuition waiver to attend John Marshall Law School.

North Central College political science major and junior Jennifer Rieger earned second-place honors and a tuition waiver to attend John Marshall Law School after competing at the law school’s annual National Undergraduate Diversity Mock Trial Competition April 13-14.

Some 60 top students from colleges and universities across the country met at Marshall’s Chicago campus to compete for the chance to win law school tuition waivers. Rieger’s second-place finish in the individual best advocate award netted her a $9,000 prize in tuition waivers to John Marshall.

Join the political science department to watch the Iowa caucuses for the Republican presidential nomination at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, in Smith Hall.

The North Central College campus community is invited to join members of the political science department Tuesday, Jan. 3, to watch the first-in-the-nation selection for the Republican presidential nomination. Watch an actual Iowa caucus taking place from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. in Smith Hall at Old Main. Refreshments will be served.

D-Term Verandah courses offer experiential learning

North Central College offers a record 17 Verandah experiences during D-Term, including four for first-year students only. Register on Merlin; space is limited.

During 2011 D-Term, North Central College is offering a record number of Verandah course offerings for students. These experiential learning opportunities connect faculty and students in informal environments outside the classroom around topics of interest.

Stephen Maynard Caliendo, North Central College associate professor of political science, is cited in a Sunday, Nov. 6 Daily Herald article about how the Tea Party and Occupy movements are spurring citizen involvement in America's political process.

Caliendo told the newspaper his North Central students are watching both the Tea Party and the Occupy movements with great interest.

Student participates in President Clinton’s new initiative

Senior Liz Hasseld is chosen a volunteer in the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) America meeting in Chicago to address job creation and economic growth.

July 6, 2011—When the premier Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) America conference came to Chicago June 29-30, Liz Hasseld ’12 was in the thick of things. On her own, she had applied and was chosen to work as a volunteer, which involved supporting CGI staff in coordinating logistics of the speakers and the more than 700 leaders from businesses, nonprofits and government during the two-day meeting.
