Wis works with choral musicians as guest conductor at festival

Ramona Wis, North Central College Mimi Rolland Professor in the Fine Arts and professor of music, was guest conductor for Honors Music Festival at area school.

Ramona Wis, North Central College Mimi Rolland Professor in the Fine Arts and professor and chair of music, was guest conductor for the Northwest Upstate Illini Conference (NUIC) Honors Music Festival held at Galena High School in Galena, Ill., March 22. Wis worked with nearly 100 choral musicians during the daylong conference and presented a public performance that evening.

Wis joined North Central’s faculty in 1994. She received a B.S. from the University of Illinois, an M.M. from Northern Illinois University and a Ph.D. from Northwestern University.

Mouse receives award for his work as jazz drummer, educator

Jack Mouse—North Central College adjunct assistant professor of music, coordinator of the jazz studies program and jazz drummer—received an Aquarian Award of Achievement, presented by Aquarian Drumheads in acknowledgement of Mouse’s contributions as a jazz educator and performer.

Founded in 1980 by famous drummer and clinician Roy Burns, Aquarian Drumheads is an international company with a number of innovative patented products and sells drumheads and other gear to artists around the world, including Chad Butler of Switchfoot and Rikki Rockett of Poison.

Ramona Wis, North Central College Mimi Rolland Professor in the Fine Arts and professor and chair of music, presented a session titled, “Choral Conducting Master Class: Small Changes, Big Results,” at the 2013 Illinois Music Education Conference on Jan. 24 in Peoria, Ill.

Blanchet plays percussion in “Annie”

George Blanchet, North Central College percussionist and lecturer in music, plays percussion in the musical “Annie” at Paramount Theater through December.

George Blanchet, North Central College percussionist and lecturer in music, plays percussion in the family musical “Annie,” which runs Nov. 21-Dec. 30 at Paramount Theater in Aurora. Blanchet has performed for other musical productions at the Paramount, as well as the Chicago Sinfonietta and Metropolis Symphony Orchestra.

Blanchet has been teaching percussion at North Central since 1998 and directs the Percussion Ensemble.

North Central College alumni honored for teaching excellence in Naperville schools

Two alumni of North Central College’s music education program are being recognized by Naperville Community Unit School District 203 for excellence in teaching.

May 15, 2012—Two alumni of North Central College’s music education program are being recognized by Naperville Community Unit School District 203 for excellence in teaching.

Nicholas Janssen, a 2005 graduate of North Central College, received District 203’s Outstanding Early Educator Award for his work as choral director at Naperville North High School. Emily Steffen, a 2010 graduate, received the district’s Outstanding First-Year Teacher Award  for her work at Naper and Ellsworth elementary schools.

Jonathon Kirk, North Central College assistant professor of music, gave lecture on re-imagining Bach’s canons and premiered composition at Auburn University.

Jonathon Kirk, North Central College assistant professor of music, gave a lecture titled “Strange Loops: Re-imagining Bach’s Canons” at Auburn University in Auburn, Ala., April 23, as part of a short residency. His lecture looked at the unusual structures of three lesser-known canons by Bach—“BWV 1072,” “BWV 1074” and “BWV 1078”—and discussed issues of aural perception within various types of canonic writing. He also reflected on other concepts introduced in Douglas Hofstadter’s seminal book, “Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid.”

Ramona M. Wis, North Central College’s Mimi Rolland Professor in the Fine Arts and professor and chair of music, gave an in-service workshop presentation titled “Best Practices in the Choral/General Music Classroom” for the vocal/general music teachers in Naperville Community Unit School District 203 on  March 2.

North Central faculty present instrumental recital

College music faculty play trombone, alto and soprano saxophone, the euphonium and piano in instrumental faculty recital Feb. 17 in Wentz Concert Hall.

North Central College music faculty will present an instrumental faculty recital at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, in Wentz Concert Hall.

Jonathon Kirk, assistant professor of music, will play the euphonium and trombone, and Lawrence Van Oyen, professor of music and director of bands, will play alto saxophone. They will be accompanied by other North Central faculty—Joann Cho and Jon Warfel on piano and Mitch Paliga on soprano saxophone. Admission is free.
