Inaugural Pi Mu Epsilon Prime Time Mathematics Colloquium held in May

Math department inaugurates Pi Mu Epsilon Honor Society and first of many mathematics-related colloquia featuring talks by Google software engineer, students.

Nearly 90 students, faculty, staff and visitors enjoyed hearing two talks as part of North Central’s Inaugural Pi Mu Epsilon Prime Time Mathematics Colloquium on May 25. The first talk, titled “The Mathematics of Google,” was presented by Shaun Cox, software engineer with Google. Following his talk, students and faculty were initiated into the Pi Mu Epsilon Honor Society.

Heller and McMahon lead math workshop for girls

Katherine Heller, assistant professor of mathematics, and Mary McMahon, associate professor of mathematics, led math workshop for middle school girls.

Katherine Heller, assistant professor of mathematics, and Mary McMahon, associate professor of mathematics and mathematics education coordinator, led a workshop in math activities on deciphering codes, Fibonacci numbers, golden rectangles and tessellations for middle school Junior Scholar girls during three afternoons in April and May. The workshop was funded by a Sonia Kovalevsky Grant from the Association of Women in Mathematics and National Science Foundation. The goal of the grant is to foster interest in girls to follow careers in mathematics.

Murawska leads workshop

Jackie Murawska, adjunct instructor of mathematics, led a workshop at the Metropolitan Mathematics Club of Chicago Conference.

Feb. 18, 2011—Jackie Murawska, adjunct instructor of mathematics, led a workshop titled “Investigations Using Inductive Reasoning: Adding Excitement to the Standard Curriculum” for middle school teachers at the Metropolitan Mathematics Club of Chicago (MMC) Conference of Workshops on Feb. 5 in Lincolnshire, Ill. This is Murawska’s third year as half-time faculty in the mathematics department.

Mike Koon '93

Mike Koon served as lead clinician on behalf of the National Association of Sports Public Address Announcers at Bloomington High School. The clinic addresses the P.A. announcer’s role, the Do’s and Don’ts of announcing football, how to handle emergency situations, scriptwriting and working with a spotter. Koon is assistant sports information director and the voice of University of Illinois football.

College hosts national math contest for junior high students

North Central College will host a testing site for the American Mathematics Contest 8 (AMC 8) for students in grades 8 and below.

Sept. 28, 2010--North Central College will host a testing site for the American Mathematics Contest 8 (AMC 8) for students in grades 8 and below. Students who are either home-schooled or enrolled in area junior high schools are invited to participate. The contest will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, in the College's Smith Hall at Old Main, 30 N. Brainard St., Naperville.
