Open house Nov. 12 for top high school students wanting to earn college credit

Gifted high school-aged students can earn up to two years of college credit while still in high school through North Central College’s Lederman Scholars Program. Prospective students and their parents are invited to learn more at an open house from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, in the College’s Smith Hall at Old Main, 30 N. Brainard St. Registration begins at 6 p.m.

Neil Nicholson, North Central College assistant professor of mathematics, and four current and former students—Donglun Liu ’14, Steven Mackey ’13, Tyler Schroeder ’13 and Kyle Thomas ’13—were coauthors of a paper titled “Average Bridge Number of Shadow Resolutions” that was published in the Journal of Knot Theory and its Ramifications, October 2013.

New faculty members begin academic year at North Central College

North Central College has appointed five new tenure-track faculty members for the 2013-2014 academic year, which begins Sept. 16. Among those new faculty are Assistant Professor of Mathematics Marco Martinez.  

Murawska elected to ICTM board of directors

Jaclyn Murawska, North Central College adjunct instructor of mathematics, was elected to board of directors of the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Jaclyn Murawska, North Central College adjunct instructor of mathematics, has been elected to the board of directors of the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM). She will serve a three-year term as a director-at-large beginning October 2013.

Maria Gommel earns two awards at Honors Convocation

Maria Gommel received the Outstanding Major in Mathematics and Outstanding Student in the Science Division awards at North Central’s 2013 Honors Convocation.

Maria Gommel, daughter of Mark and Laurie Gommel of Malta, Ill., received two awards—the Outstanding Major in Mathematics and the Outstanding Student in the Division of Science awards—during Honors Day May 14 at North Central College.

A senior, Maria is majoring in mathematics and actuarial science at North Central College. She is a graduate of DeKalb High School.

North Central’s math program wins grant for high school enrichment program

North Central College’s mathematics department secured Dolciani Mathematics Enrichment Grant to aid high-achieving high school math students.

North Central College’s department of mathematics recently secured a competitive Dolciani Mathematics Enrichment Grant (DMEG) from the Mathematical Association of America. The grant will be used to develop E2 (Expository Engagement): North Central Math Circle, an after-school math enrichment program for area high school students.

“It’s really exciting to be able to engage young, math-minded students at North Central,” said Neil Nicholson, North Central College assistant professor of mathematics and project director of E2.

Murawska receives mathematics education research award

Jaclyn Murawska, North Central College adjunct instructor of mathematics, received an award from Northern Illinois University for her recent research.

Jaclyn Murawska, North Central College adjunct instructor of mathematics, received the Merlyn J. Behr Award in Mathematics Education from Northern Illinois University and its Department of Mathematical Sciences. The award recognizes Murawska’s significant contribution to the field of mathematics education for her dissertation research, “Preservice Elementary School Teachers’ Conceptual Understanding of Place Value Within a Constructivist Framework.”

Neil Nicholson, North Central College assistant professor of mathematics, was a coauthor of a chapter in the book titled “Service-Learning in Higher Education: Connecting the Global to the Local.” The book emerged from presentations at the Fourth International Symposium on Service-Learning held in China in September 2011, where Nicholson co-presented with colleagues from the University of Indiana-Bloomington and William Jewell College.
