North Central seniors accepted to Nashville internship

North Central College seniors Elisabeth Volkamer and Jessica Martin are chosen for internship in Nashville that empowers women to promote social justice.

North Central College seniors Elisabeth Volkamer and Jessica Martin were accepted to a 10-month internship at Belle H. Bennett House, an intentional community for the empowerment of young women at Scarritt-Bennett Center in Nashville, TN.

The program, beginning in August, consists of 40-hour work weeks that focus on female empowerment and the eradication of racism through volunteer work, community living and internships at various organizations in the area.

Student broadcasters representing WONC-FM 89.1, North Central College’s student-run radio station, earned six awards, including three first-place prizes, at the Illinois Broadcasters Association’s (IBA) 2012 student Silver Dome Awards on Sept. 21.

In this state contest, WONC first-place winners topped nominees from Eastern Illinois University, Loyola University, Illinois State University and the Illinois Center for Broadcasting.

Student broadcasters nominated for awards in state, national contests

Several North Central College student broadcasters representing WONC-FM 89.1 have earned nominations in state and national competitions.

Several student broadcasters representing WONC-FM 89.1, North Central College’s student-run radio station, have earned nominations in state and national competitions.

In a state competition, eight students earned six nominations in five different categories in the annual Student Silver Dome Awards presented each fall by the Illinois Broadcasters Association to the top college and university radio and TV programs in the state. The awards will be presented in a luncheon ceremony Sept. 21 at Illinois State University in Normal.

New faculty members begin academic year at North Central College

North Central student journalists earn Illinois College Press Association awards

Student journalists from North Central College have earned three awards for excellence from the Illinois College Press Association (ICPA).

Feb. 29, 2012—Student journalists from North Central College have earned three awards for excellence from the Illinois College Press Association (ICPA).

The awards were announced at the ICPA’s annual conference Feb. 17-18 at the Double Tree Hotel in Chicago. College newspapers from throughout Illinois, ranging from those at small colleges to publications at large state universities, participated in the annual journalism contest. Entries are judged by professional editors who are members of the Illinois Press Association.

North Central alum Andrew Phillips joins front office of pro team

Andrew Phillips, a 2009 North Central College graduate, will join the front office of the Akron Racers pro softball team as director of marketing and PR.

Oct. 19, 2011—Andrew Phillips, a 2009 North Central College graduate, is joining the front office of the professional softball team the Akron Racers as director of marketing and public relations.

Prior to accepting a position with the Racers, Phillips worked with another National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) team, the Chicago Bandits. While a student at North Central, Phillips interned with the Bandits for two years before assuming the role of director of public relations, social media and ticket sales after graduation.

Glende presents research from dissertation at national meetings

Philip Glende, North Central College visiting assistant professor of English, presents research from his dissertation at three national conferences.

Philip Glende, visiting assistant professor of English and advisor to The Chronicle student newspaper, spoke at the annual convention of the American Journalism Historians Association in Kansas City, Mo., on Oct. 7. He was part of a panel that discussed his 2010 dissertation, which received honorable mention in the 2011 Margaret A. Blanchard Doctoral Dissertation Award competition. The title of his dissertation and talk was “Labor Makes the News: Newspapers, Journalism, and Organized Labor, 1933-1955.”

Alumnus in the news, named NCTV sports director

Sports director Will Armistead ’07/M ’09 is part of the Naperville Community Television (NCTV) sports production team, which kicks off its fourth season of “Naperville Sports Weekly” Aug. 29.

Junior heads to Uganda during spring break to research crisis journalism

Ryan Piers, a junior from Washington, Ill., chose to travel Uganda, Africa, to conduct research for a project related to his major in broadcast communication and minor in journalism.

Marathon winner also “runs” Chicago Marathon

Jeremy Borling ’02 likes to run marathons, but come October 11, he’ll be too busy helping run the Chicago Marathon to run in it. As communications manager for Chicago Event Management—which organizes the Chicago Marathon for sponsor Bank of America—Borling oversees print publications for several audiences and the marathon’s website. And for the first time, he will coordinate the participation of elite runners from around the globe.
