Jonathon Kirk, North Central College assistant professor of music, presented a sound installation performance at University of North Carolina museum.

Jonathon Kirk, North Central College assistant professor of music, co-presented a sound installation performance titled “Cryoacoustic Orb” at the Ackland Art Museum at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Jan. 20. The four-hour performance complemented the university’s yearlong academic theme “Water in Our World.”

Kirk gives talk, showcases original work

Jonathon Kirk, North Central College assistant professor of music, gave lecture on re-imagining Bach’s canons and premiered composition at Auburn University.

Jonathon Kirk, North Central College assistant professor of music, gave a lecture titled “Strange Loops: Re-imagining Bach’s Canons” at Auburn University in Auburn, Ala., April 23, as part of a short residency. His lecture looked at the unusual structures of three lesser-known canons by Bach—“BWV 1072,” “BWV 1074” and “BWV 1078”—and discussed issues of aural perception within various types of canonic writing. He also reflected on other concepts introduced in Douglas Hofstadter’s seminal book, “Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid.”

North Central faculty present instrumental recital

College music faculty play trombone, alto and soprano saxophone, the euphonium and piano in instrumental faculty recital Feb. 17 in Wentz Concert Hall.

North Central College music faculty will present an instrumental faculty recital at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, in Wentz Concert Hall.

Jonathon Kirk, assistant professor of music, will play the euphonium and trombone, and Lawrence Van Oyen, professor of music and director of bands, will play alto saxophone. They will be accompanied by other North Central faculty—Joann Cho and Jon Warfel on piano and Mitch Paliga on soprano saxophone. Admission is free.

Kirk creates digital soundscape of European landscape

Jonathon Kirk, assistant professor of music at North Central College, was co-commissioned to develop a digital soundscape of a Belgian countryside.

Jonathon Kirk, assistant professor of music, was co-commissioned with Belgian artist and composer Thomas Smetryns to develop a site-specific digital soundscape for the Klankatlas project sponsored in part by the Belgian Flemish government and Musica Impulscentrum voor Muziek. For the larger project, sound artists were asked to focus specifically on the region of Belgian Limburg.

Jonathon Kirk, assistant professor of music, performed and presented his custom interactive sound processing software at the International Society for Improvised Music (ISIM) conference, titled Improvisation and Cross-Cultural Creativity: Fostering Connections Through Spontaneous Musical Art. The conference was held at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor Dec. 2-5.
