North Central College will host a symposium on Global and Environmental Health, featuring two keynote speakers with expertise on the subject—Augustine Afullo, Ph.D., and Christopher ‘Sola Olopade, M.D.—and sessions led by College faculty and students on Feb. 19.

“Sicko” gives view of health care in the United States

The campus community is invited to view documentary “Sicko” and hear faculty discussion as part of a North Central Global Human Rights event, Tuesday Oct. 16.

On Oct. 16, the campus community is invited to view the 2007 documentary “Sicko,” one of three North Central College Global Human Rights events on campus this fall. Sponsored by the Office of International Programs and Leadership, Ethics & Values program, the free event takes place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, in the theatre at Meiley-Swallow Hall. Filmmaker Michael Moore investigates and presents his perspective of health care, health insurance and the pharmaceutical industry in the United States.

The campus community is invited to attend an Oxfam America Hunger Banquet, a North Central College Global Human Rights event, on Tuesday, Oct. 9.

On Oct. 9, the campus community is invited to participate in the Oxfam America Hunger Banquet, one of three North Central College Global Human Rights events on campus this fall. Hosted by an FYE student class and sponsored by the Office of International Programs and Leadership, Ethics & Values program, the free event takes place from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, in the Harold and Eva White Activities Center, second floor.

Faculty and staff recognized for outstanding service, teaching, scholarship

North Central College recognizes faculty and administrative staff members for outstanding teaching, scholarship and service “above and beyond the call of duty.”

North Central College recognized faculty and administrative staff members for their outstanding teaching, scholarship and service “above and beyond the call of duty” for the 2011-2012 academic year. Each was presented with endowed awards established in memory of two North Central College alumni—Clarence F. Dissinger, Class of 1921, and his sister Ruth C. Dissinger Althaus, Class of 1922. With the exception of the scholarship prize, awards were based on student, faculty and staff nominations and announced in May 2012.

Film Central, North Central College’s indie/social-change film series, presents guest speaker Diane Nilan and the national premiere screening of the short film “Littlest Nomads” at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 10, in the theatre at Meiley-Swallow Hall. The film is the second in the Film Central series during spring term and is sponsored by the College’s English department, fine & performing arts, Office of International Programs and Leadership, Ethics and Values.

The Office of International Programs, ThinkGlobal Arts foundation and Sigma Tau Delta, North Central’s English honor society, will co-host a talk by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, in Wentz Concert Hall. Divakaruni is an award-winning author, poet and teacher.

North Central’s Office of International Programs and Leadership, Ethics and Values program kicks off the College’s third annual Spring Symposium on global human rights at noon Monday, April 9, with a guest presentation titled “Fighting HIV/AIDS by Bringing New Technologies Closer to Patients.”

Jonathan Lehe, senior laboratory analyst for the Clinton Health Access Initiative in Nairobi, Kenya, will discuss new point-of-care testing that provides diagnosis and therapy for AIDS patients in resource-limited settings.
