Ann Durkin Keating, North Central College Dr. C. Frederick Toenniges Professor of History, will appear on CSPAN-3 at 9:45 a.m. (CDT) Saturday, Oct. 13. She will give a lecture and Q&A for approximately one hour about her newest book, “Rising up from Indian Country: The Battle of Fort Dearborn and the Birth of Chicago.” Her lecture was prerecorded with an audience at the Niles Public Library on Sept. 12.

Wolf publishes histories of baseball legends

Gregory H. Wolf, North Central College professor of German, is a member of the Society of American Baseball Research (SABR) and published the feature article, “No-hitters from unlikely pitchers,” on Sept. 13 in The Hardball Times, an Internet site focusing on the history of Major League Baseball and advanced sabermetric analysis.

Ann Durkin Keating, North Central College Dr. C. Frederick Toenniges Professor of History, has authored a new book, titled “Rising up from Indian Country: The Battle of Fort Dearborn and the Birth of Chicago,” published by the University of Chicago Press. The book’s release coincides with the Aug. 15, 2012, bicentennial of the Battle of Fort Dearborn.

Kenton Skarin ’04 has reached the upper echelon of the legal profession. He was appointed to serve as a U.S. Supreme Court law clerk for Justice Clarence Thomas for the 2012-2013 session and began his assignment in July after moving his family from Wheaton, IL, to Alexandria, VA, for the year.

“I really consider this as the opportunity of a lifetime—I’m one of the luckiest guys alive and North Central was the beginning point,” he says.

Emily Rademaker receives academic and service awards

Emily Rademaker of Cary was awarded the 2012 Outstanding Major in German and Outstanding Service to Student Life awards at North Central College.

Emily “Em” Rademaker of Cary, Ill., was awarded the 2012 Outstanding Major in German Award and Outstanding Service to Student Life Award during Honors Day May 15 at North Central College.

Rademaker is a senior majoring in German, classical civilization and sociology with minors in history and anthropology at North Central College. After graduation, she will serve in the Republic of South Africa for a 27-month assignment with the Peace Corps. She is the daughter of Dana and Linnea Rademaker and is a 2008 graduate of Cary-Grove Community High School.

Brian Hoffert, North Central College associate professor of religious studies and history and coordinator of East Asian studies, participated as presenter and moderator at the 8th Annual Midwest Conference on Chinese Thought at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind., April 13-15. North Central College hosted the conference in 2011.
