Navakas gives presentation at academic conference

Francine Navakas gave a presentation at the Association of American Colleges and Universities Network for Academic Renewal Conference in Chicago.

Francine Navakas—Svend and Elizabeth Bramsen Professor in the Humanities, professor of English, director of integrative programs and associate academic dean—presented at the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) Network for Academic Renewal Conference in Chicago March 4. The conference theme, General Education and Assessment, attracted 800 attendees.

Mike Koon '93

Mike Koon served as lead clinician on behalf of the National Association of Sports Public Address Announcers at Bloomington High School. The clinic addresses the P.A. announcer’s role, the Do’s and Don’ts of announcing football, how to handle emergency situations, scriptwriting and working with a spotter. Koon is assistant sports information director and the voice of University of Illinois football.

Jack Shindler, professor of English and director of international programs, and Kimberly Larsson, assistant to the director of international programs, gave presentations related to education abroad at the Association of International Educators (NAFSA) Conference in Detroit, Nov. 3-5.

Guzman helps nominate Chicago Literary Hall of Fame inductees

Richard Guzman, professor of English and coordinator of master in liberal studies program, served as a nominator for the new Chicago Literary Hall of Fame.

Richard Guzman, professor of English and coordinator of master in liberal studies program, served on the Committee of Nominators and Selectors for the new Chicago Literary Hall of Fame, which held its first induction ceremony Nov. 20, hosted by the Chicago Writers Association at Northeastern University in Chicago. The ceremony drew together some of Chicago’s greatest writers to honor Saul Bellow, Lorraine Hansberry, Gwendolyn Brooks, Nelson Algren, Richard Wright and Studs Terkel.

Andrei Guruianu, assistant professor of English, released his book “Metal and Plum: A Memoir” about the impact of immigration on his family.

Andrei Guruianu, assistant professor of English, released his memoir “Metal and Plum” by Mayapple Press in November 2010. It’s available at Amazon and www.mayapplepress.com. His book conveys the impact of immigration on his family, contrasting the hardships of Ceausescu’s Romania with the challenges of adaptation to the United States and how painful it is to go home and find the place you knew is no longer there.

Renard Jackson (photo), assistant professor of education, and Jack Shindler, professor of English and director of international programs, participated in the Scholarship of Pedagogy Symposium sponsored by the Associated Colleges of the Chicago Area (ACCA). Hosted by Dominican University on Oct. 30, the conference was titled Connecting the Dots: Helping Students Integrate Learning Across Contexts.

June 7, 2010--Joshua Bailey, a junior at North Central College, received an award for an academic paper he presented at the 18th Annual Conference for Students of Political Science, hosted by the Illinois State University (ISU) Department of Politics and Government on April 28.

Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence

North Central welcomes its fifth Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence, Radha Rajagopalan from Toronto, Canada. Her strong interest in global climate change and water conservation complements the College’s 2009-2010 international and cultural focus on global environmental change.
