Jeremy Thurlby earns Outstanding Major in Art Award

Jeremy Thurlby was awarded the Outstanding Major in Art Award during North Central College's 2013 Honors Convocation.

Jeremy Thurlby of Oswego, Ill., was awarded the Outstanding Major in Art Award during Honors Day May 14 at North Central College in Naperville, Ill.

A senior, Jeremy is majoring in studio art at North Central College. Focusing on 3D work, he likes constructing things with his hands. His artwork reflects his background in the trades and his talents in blacksmithing and welding.

North Central College students showcase talent in Senior Art Show

The 2013 Senior Art Show features the diverse body of work by North Central College art seniors, May 10-June 10, in two gallery locations.

The 2013 Senior Art Show features the diverse body of work created by North Central College art students, who will be graduating with a bachelor’s degree in studio art or art education.

The exhibit is free and open to the public in the College’s Schoenherr Gallery at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave., Naperville. An artist reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 31; complimentary refreshments will be served.

Christine Rabenold, North Central College assistant professor of art and student art gallery director, displayed four ceramic pieces in an exhibition titled “Redefined” at Spring Street Studios in Houston. Her artwork was part of the Concurrent Independent Exhibitions at the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) conference held March 20-23.

Artists present papermaking workshop to connect veterans, civilians

North Central College’s art department will host the Combat Paper Project, a daylong artistic workshop involving veterans and artists, on Oct. 30.

North Central College’s art department will host the Combat Paper Project, an artistic collaboration initiated and presented by artists Drew Cameron and Drew Matott that involves veterans, artists and academic institutions.

Based out of art studios throughout the country, the Combat Paper Project comes to North Central’s studios and campus on Tuesday, Oct. 30. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in room 17 at Meiley-Swallow Hall, Cameron and Matott will demonstrate their project utilizing papermaking workshops to help veterans reconcile and share their personal experiences.

North Central College is honoring Maria Wynne of Chicago with a 2012 Outstanding Alumni Award.

Wynne and five others will be honored during the College’s Homecoming Convocation at 4:15 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, at North Central College’s Wentz Concert Hall at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave., Naperville.

Skurkis coordinates exhibit, showcases his artwork in three exhibits

Barry Skurkis, North Central College associate professor of art, arranged two Chicago Society of Artists exhibits, presented his own work in three exhibits.

Barry Skurkis, North Central College associate professor of art, is vice president of the Chicago Society of Artists and arranged the society’s Members’ Exhibit, sponsored by the Anderson Art Center in Kenosha, Wis. Skurkis selected the artists, artwork and prepared the prospectus. Some 37 artists participated and displayed more than 120 pieces of art, which included oil and acrylic paintings, watercolors, monoprints, photographs and sculptures. In addition, the Chicago Society of Artists 2012 Traveling Calendar Exhibit will also be on display at the center. Both exhibits run Aug.
