With all-new, professional equipment by Life Fitness, the Res/Rec Fitness Center opened Sept. 13 to students, faculty and staff. The new treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bikes and stair-stepper are ready for action. Free weights will be stocked and ready for use Tuesday, Sept. 14. The fitness room is comfortable and cool and features large windows with views to the recreation center and soccer and softball fields. Student workers are available if you have questions about how to use the equipment.

Some 700 student-athletes, coaches and faculty mentors met in the Res/Center Center Sept. 12 for North Central’s annual celebration, The Huddle, to kick off the new year. President Hal Wilde and Director of Athletics Jim Miller were the first to speak and reflected on last year’s successes and how to balance athletic and academic success. After the traditional NC Influence T-shirts were distributed and coaches and faculty mentors were introduced, guest speaker Sue Enquist addressed the enthusiastic crowd.

The defending national champion North Central College men’s cross country team heads into the 2010 season as the No. 2-ranked Division III team in the nation, according to the initial rankings released Sept. 1 by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). On Aug. 24, the USTFCCCA ranked the Cardinal team second in the Midwest Region in the preseason regional rankings.

College psychologist leads research to prevent bullying in schools

A licensed clinical psychologist at North Central College conducts research with a school district to assess bullying issues of students in grades K-12.

Keith Avery, Ph.D., a licensed clinical psychologist at North Central College, is conducting research with a Chicago area school district to assess bullying issues, school climate and the social and emotional development of students in grades K-12. Working with administrators at Kenilworth School District 38 in Illinois, he is assessing 400 K-8th grade students and the staff and faculty regarding bullying behavior, school climate issues, and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) as required by Illinois State Law Public Act 93-0495.

"Blue Gold" addresses worldwide shortage of fresh water

The College’s Cultural Events and Office of International Programs will co-host the free screening of the documentary Blue Gold: World Water Wars at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, in Meiley-Swallow Hall. Some business circles have referred to fresh water as “blue gold” just as oil is called “black gold.” This film features interviews with 13 specialists who address the worldwide shortage of fresh water.
