May 22, 2012—Lauren Smith of Byron was awarded the 2012 Outstanding Major in Theatre Award during Honors Day May 15 at North Central College.

Smith is a senior majoring in theatre and psychology. She is the daughter of Kathryn Smith and the late Randy Smith and is a graduate of Byron High School.

May 21, 2012—Emily Schmidt of Mascoutah, Ill., was awarded the 2012 Outstanding Major in English Award during Honors Day May 15 at North Central College.

Schmidt is a senior majoring in theatre and English writing at North Central College. She is the daughter of Bradley and Mary Schmidt and is a 2008 graduate of Mascoutah High School.

North Central College presents a production of “The Threepenny Opera,” the early 20th century musical by German playwright Bertolt Brecht and composer Kurt Weill.

Four performances of “The Threepenny Opera” will be presented at 7:30 p.m. May 10, 11 and 12 and at 2 p.m. May 13 in Madden Theatre at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Susie Gawriluk is an account executive for Journal Community Publishing Group, selling advertising for three magazines and websites: Silent Sports, Wisconsin Trails and Wisconsin Journeys. She founded Denim and Dessert Theatre in Presque Isle, WI, in 2004 and continues to serve as its artistic director for three annual shows. She married for the first time in September 2011, to Tom Preston, “under a beautiful tent with lanterns and flowers, fresh from friends’ gardens, and a bonfire afterward.” She lives in Arbor Vitae, WI, and may be reached at sgawriluk1@gmail.com.

Carolyn Wroblewski Turner '89

Carolyn Wroblewski Turner was awarded the Carl Vacketta Administrative Excellence Award for her professional contributions as assistant dean for strategic initiatives to the University of Illinois College of Law in 2011. She works with senior administrators on issues and projects related to strategic communications, external engagement, long-range planning, alumni relations, donor stewardship, gift strategy and the college’s periodic reaccreditation process. She oversees the communications and special events staff and serves on various committees and working groups.

North Central College student reads at Chicago’s Citywide Poetry Festival

North Central College student Emily Schmidt participated in the 13th annual Citywide Undergraduate Poetry Festival in Chicago.

North Central College student Emily Schmidt participated in the 13th annual Citywide Undergraduate Poetry Festival in Chicago.

The festival was held April 5 at Columbia College Chicago and featured the talents of 12 poets from Chicago-area colleges and universities who read their own original works. Participating institutions included DePaul University, Northwestern University and the University of Chicago.

16 North Central student broadcasters earn nominations in national competition

Sixteen North Central College broadcasters representing WONC-FM 89.1 have earned 12 nominations in an annual national competition.

Feb. 7, 2012—Sixteen North Central College broadcasters representing WONC-FM 89.1, the College’s student-run radio station, have earned 12 nominations in an annual national competition sponsored by the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS).

Winners of the Golden Microphone Trophy Awards will be announced March 2-4 at the 72nd Annual IBS International Radio/Webcast Conference in New York City. Last year, North Central students brought home first-place awards for Best Sports Play-by-Play and Best Documentary at the 2011 IBS awards.
