Abel Sanchez was awarded the Outstanding Major in Secondary Education Award during North Central College’s 2014 Honors Convocation.

Abel Sanchez, son of Miguel Sanchez of Aurora, was awarded the Outstanding Major in Secondary Education Award during Honors Convocation May 13 at North Central College in Naperville.

A senior, Abel is majoring in Spanish and in secondary education at North Central College. He is a graduate of East Aurora High School and, starting in the fall, will teach Spanish at West Aurora High School.

Kelly Rasmussen, daughter of Lyle and Mimi Rasmussen of Rockton, Ill., was awarded the Outstanding Major in English Award during Honors Day May 13 at North Central College in Naperville.

A senior, Kelly is a double major in English: writing and Spanish at North Central College. She is a graduate of Hononegah Community High School.

Stephania Rodriguez, daughter of Sergio and Norma Rodriguez of Aurora, was recognized with three awards—Outstanding Major in Human Resource Management, Outstanding Student in Division of Economics and Business, and Outstanding Service to Student Life—during Honors Day May 13 at North Central College in Naperville.

A senior, Stephania is majoring in human resource management with a minor in Spanish at North Central College. She is a graduate of Oswego East High School.

Cameron Bechard, son of Glenn and Amber Bechard of Plainfield, was awarded the Outstanding Major in Chinese Award during Honors Day May 13 at North Central College in Naperville.

A junior, Cameron carries a double major in Chinese and international business with a minor in Spanish at North Central College. He will be studying abroad and conducting an internship in Costa Rica in the fall. He is a graduate of Plainfield North High School.

Britney Kravish, daughter of Joe and Heather LaMonto, of Frankfort, Ill., was awarded the Outstanding Major in Spanish Award during Honors Day May 13 at North Central College in Naperville, Ill.

A senior, Britney is majoring in Spanish with minors in secondary education and English Language Learning (ELL) at North Central College. She is a graduate of Lincoln-Way East High School.

Monica Vuksanovich, North Central College visiting assistant professor of Spanish, and Katherine Pope, director of the English Language Institute (ELI), presented a talk titled “Partnerships for Success: Building and Growing University-level ESL Programs” at the statewide Illinois Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages-Bilingual Education (ITBE) conference this spring.  

Ian Wright ’14 and Britney Kravish ’14 both earn Fulbright ETA appointments

North Central College students Ian Wright ’14 and Britney Kravish ’14 earn Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship appointments to Germany and to Mexico.

Two graduating seniors who were previously alternates for Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships (ETA) learned that they have been awarded Fulbright awards for the coming year. Ian Wright ’14 of New Lenox, IL, and Britney Kravish ’14 of Frankfort, IL, join Mark Zajac ’12 as 2014-2015 Fulbright ETA scholarship winners. They will receive a fully funded one-year appointment abroad as cultural ambassadors and English teachers. Wright and Zajac will go to Germany, while Kravish will travel to Mexico.

Spanish department features four films, faculty discussions during film festival

North Central College’s Spanish department and Fusión Espanola host “Festival de cine iberoamericano,” a viewing of films and discussion series, April 30-May 8.

North Central College’s Spanish department and student club Fusión Espanola cohost “Festival de cine iberoamericano,” a viewing of four films and faculty-led discussion series April 30 through May 8. The film festival is meant to serve as a cultural component for the Spanish language program. All screenings are free, open to the campus community and will be held in the theatre at Meiley-Swallow Hall.

Mark Zajac ’12 will head to Germany with a Fulbright

North Central College alumnus Mark Zajac receives Fulbright Teaching Assistant post to teach English and engage in cultural programs in Germany.

Mark Zajac ’12 has been named as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) to Germany, continuing North Central’s history of placing graduates in this prestigious program.

He is currently serving as a Dunn Fellow in Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn’s Chicago Office. While a student, he was a College Scholar, had triple majors in global studies: international business, German and Spanish, and a minor in Chinese. He studied abroad in Heidelberg, Germany, and Seville, Spain, to refine his language skills in German and Spanish.

Three North Central College students presented at the Academy of International Business Midwest chapter conference, held March 26-28 in Chicago. They presented along with their North Central faculty supervisor Robert Moussetis, professor of international business, chair of management and marketing and coordinator of graduate business programs.
