Jane McCullough ’15 received the Outstanding Major in Biochemistry Award during North Central College’s 2015 Honors Convocation.

Jane McCullough ’15, daughter of Joseph and Sheila McCullough of Bloomington, was awarded the Outstanding Major in Biochemistry Award during Honors Day in May at North Central College.

Jane graduated in June from North Central College with a major in biochemistry and minor in Spanish. She is a graduate of University High School.

Talking with North Central College’s new vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty, Dr. Abiodun “G-P” Goke-Pariola, there are a few words you won’t hear—like “status quo.” He pursued the position as leader of academic affairs knowing that his challenge will be to elevate the reputation of the faculty and academic programs, which in quality far exceeds similar and better-known institutions. It’s a goal that excites him.

North Central College invites multicultural involvement on campus with a series of events celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month.

North Central College’s multicultural life on campus is expanding this fall to incorporate a larger celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Though the College promotes many other Hispanic and Latino involvement opportunities throughout the academic year, Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 is devoted to a campus-wide celebration of various Hispanic cultures.

Heidi Nelson ’15, daughter of David and Sandra Nelson, of Carol Stream, Ill., was awarded the Outstanding Major in Elementary Education, Outstanding Major in Spanish and Outstanding Student in the Arts and Letters Division awards during Honors Day 2015 in May at North Central College. She also was named the 2015 Outstanding Senior Woman.

Her presentation, titled "Illness and Pregnancy: Female Agency in Lope de Vega's 'El acero de Madrid,'" focused on her work on female pathology and power in 17th century Spain. She presented it at the Revisioning Early Modern Hispanisms conference, held in February at the University of Miami.

The hundreds of faculty candidates who’ve visited campus the past 20 years typically ended their interviews in the office of R. Devadoss Pandian, vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty. In his fifth floor office of Old Main, they all learned about his passion for teaching—and the No. 1 qualification for working at North Central College.

“You have to teach to every student in the class and in a class of 30 or 35 students, that’s not a small thing,” says Pandian, describing the qualities of a great teacher.
