"My professors and coaches have influenced my life so much, helping me be a better person, and I want to give back to others as a teacher and a coach."

Steve’s passion and experience for teaching history were cultivated both inside and outside the classroom. He credits the many opportunities and hours he spent with his professors just talking about history and learning how to develop his research and writing skills. His goal is to pass along his knowledge and passion to his future students.

"We have some of the brightest people in the country teaching right here. Professor Ann Keating is a leading historian in Chicago. And my other professors have published multiple times and have elite school backgrounds and chose to come here to give one-on-one time and mentoring. I’ve benefitted so much from them."

His education professors not only taught him skills he needed in the classroom but connected him with superior schools and teachers in the Naperville area for his practicum and student teaching experiences.

Keating and Hyett inducted to Naperville's Heritage Hall of Honor

Ann Durkin Keating, Dr. C. Frederick Toenniges Professor of History, and Mary Kay Hyett, office manager, Office of Community Development, will be inducted to the Naperville Heritage Society’s Heritage Hall of Honor Sunday, Aug. 1, at 2 p.m. at Naper Settlement. The yearly recognition honors people and organizations that have made significant contributions to preserving the history of Naperville. Keating will be recognized for her historical contributions.

Steve Stack’s vault reaches new heights

View the exciting 16-0 vault by Steve Stack ’10 in the May 20 Gregory Track & Field Invitational, a last chance contest at North Central’s final home meet. Tom Stacey ’13 cleared 16-07.5 in the same meet. As a result, both vaulters provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III National Championships and will find out later this weekend if they officially qualified.

College psychologist leads research to prevent bullying in schools

A licensed clinical psychologist at North Central College conducts research with a school district to assess bullying issues of students in grades K-12.

Keith Avery, Ph.D., a licensed clinical psychologist at North Central College, is conducting research with a Chicago area school district to assess bullying issues, school climate and the social and emotional development of students in grades K-12. Working with administrators at Kenilworth School District 38 in Illinois, he is assessing 400 K-8th grade students and the staff and faculty regarding bullying behavior, school climate issues, and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) as required by Illinois State Law Public Act 93-0495.

Stephen Caliendo gives talk on using new media

Stephen Maynard Caliendo, associate professor of political science, was a co-presenter with co-author Charlton McIlwain of New York University at the Transforming Race Conference sponsored by the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at The Ohio State University on March 12. They were featured presenters on a panel, “New Media: Unexpected Pathways to Empowerment,” and discussed the ways they use Facebook, Twitter and blogging to encourage meaningful discussion of race and politics through their work at The Project on Race in Political Communication.

North Central College’s Mock Trial team will compete in the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA) national tournament March 12-14 in Waukegan.

Feb. 22, 2010—Students from North Central College’s Mock Trial team will sharpen their critical thinking and public speaking skills and knowledge of legal practices by competing in the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA) national tournament March 12-14 in Waukegan. Top finishers from the opening round advance to the National Championship Tournament April 16-18 in Memphis, Tenn.
