Mary McMahon—associate professor of mathematics and mathematics education coordinator—co-facilitated a workshop titled “Teaching Mathematics Using the Common Core Standards: What’s Really Changed?” to the staff at Goldblatt Elementary School in Chicago on Sept. 2.

Darrin Vogt, education certification student who completed his certification at North Central College in 2010, was a participant and is in his second year of teaching physical education at Goldblatt.

Sept. 15, 2011—North Central College is participating in a McCormick Foundation-funded study to help the state determine new requirements for principal preparation programs at Illinois colleges and universities.

North Central’s inclusion as a recipient of grant funds from the McCormick Foundation is the latest example of how North Central College’s undergraduate and graduate degrees in education are among the most rigorous in the State of Illinois, says Kristine Servais, associate professor of education and coordinator of master of education programs at North Central.

North Central College alumnus named finalist for Illinois Teacher of the Year Award

Josh Stumpenhorst '03 Teacher of the Year finalist

North Central College alumnus Josh Stumpenhorst is among nine finalists for the 2011-2012 Illinois Teacher of the Year Award.

“I’m very humbled and grateful,” Stumpenhorst said of his nomination. “We don’t go into this profession to receive recognition.”

Stumpenhorst, a 2003 graduate of North Central College, teaches language arts and social science to sixth graders at Lincoln Junior High School in Naperville Community Unit School District 203. He credits his experience at North Central for helping him achieve success as an educator.

Wolf leads workshop for teachers of German

July 12, 2011—Mary McMahon, associate professor of mathematics and mathematics education coordinator, gave a presentation titled “Math and the Common Core” on June 24 at the ACI Summer Institute for Educators, held at the Illinois Math and Science Academy in Aurora. The annual summer institute includes presentations, keynotes and skill-building workshops that focus on teaching diverse students with varying learning styles in high-need schools.

The objective of McMahon’s presentation was to give teachers a familiarity with the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.

MAEd alumna named principal of Romeoville school

North Central College alumna Alyson Ewald has been named principal of R.C. Hill Elementary School in Romeoville.

North Central College alumna Alyson Ewald has been named principal of R.C. Hill Elementary School in Romeoville, the Valley View School District has announced.

Ewald earned a master’s degree in educational leadership and administration from North Central College, which is aligned with the national leadership standards and leads to eligibility for Type 75 General Administrative Certification.

Ewald has been at R.C. Hill since 2003, most recently as assistant principal and earlier as a fourth-grade teacher.

Heller and McMahon lead math workshop for girls

Katherine Heller, assistant professor of mathematics, and Mary McMahon, associate professor of mathematics, led math workshop for middle school girls.

Katherine Heller, assistant professor of mathematics, and Mary McMahon, associate professor of mathematics and mathematics education coordinator, led a workshop in math activities on deciphering codes, Fibonacci numbers, golden rectangles and tessellations for middle school Junior Scholar girls during three afternoons in April and May. The workshop was funded by a Sonia Kovalevsky Grant from the Association of Women in Mathematics and National Science Foundation. The goal of the grant is to foster interest in girls to follow careers in mathematics.

Education class uses Skype to connect with noted speaker

Students in the Teaching Children with Special Needs in the General Education Classroom hear lecture, ask questions of guest speaker Brian King via Skype.

Some 24 students enrolled in North Central College’s EDN 330 course Teaching Children with Special Needs in the General Education Classroom, taught by Adjunct Instructor of Education Julie Carballo, heard from and exchanged questions with guest lecturer Brian King via the Internet using Skype on May 20.

Carballo says she met King in March when he gave a presentation on sensory processing disorders and was eager to have him speak to her students. King discussed “Five Things Every Teacher Should Know About Effectively Supporting Children on the Spectrum.”
