Alumnus Robert Taylor named finalist for Golden Apple teaching award

Robert Taylor, who earned his MAEd from North Central College in 2000, has been named a finalists for the Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching.

Robert Taylor, who earned his master’s of education (MAEd) degree in curriculum and instruction from North Central College in 2000, has been named one of 32 finalists for the Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching.

Taylor is a second-grade teacher at Central Road School in Palatine in Community Consolidated School District 15. He has taught in District 15 since 1997. He became a National Board Certified Teacher in 2003, and is currently renewing that certification.

Josh Stumpenhorst '03 named Teacher of the Year, again

Josh Stumpenhorst '03 Teacher of the Year

Josh Stumpenhorst ’03 has earned another Teacher of the Year accolade, this time from the Illinois Education Association (IEA).

Stumpenhorst is a sixth-grade social science and language arts teacher at Lincoln Junior High School in Naperville and last fall was named the Illinois State Board of Education’s Teacher of the Year.

The 158th annual IEA Representative Assembly was held at the Hilton Chicago March 15-17. The assembly is where representatives of the 130,000-member organization meet yearly to determine policies and direction for the association.

North Central College hosts “Calculus: the Musical!”—a comic and memorable review of the concepts and history of calculus—on April 3.

“Calculus: The Musical!”—a comic review of the concepts and history of calculus—returns April 3 to North Central College as part of a national tour.

Using musical parodies that span genres from light opera to hip-hop, the show is a blend of sketch comedy, musical theatre and classroom lecture. All this makes the learning of calculus fun and entertaining.

Eric Ilich ’04 named football coach at Hoffman Estates High School

North Central College alumnus Eric Ilich ’04 has been named football coach at Hoffman Estates High School, the Daily Herald reports.

Ilich, who majored in physical education K-12 at North Central, has been an assistant football coach at Bartlett High School. Prior to being the North Central Cardinals' quarterback in 2004, he was quarterback for the first two years of Naperville’s Neuqua Valley High School in 1998-1999.

North Central College’s Jan Fitzsimmons honored by education professionals

Educator Janis Fitzsimmons is being honored by peers for helping prepare young teachers to pursue careers serving children in high-need schools.

Feb. 21, 2012—North Central College educator Janis Fitzsimmons is being honored by peers for her achievements in helping prepare young teachers to pursue careers serving children in high-need schools.

Fitzsimmons will receive recognition April 16 during the annual Honoring the Profession gala hosted by School of Education at Dominican University. The gala recognizes a select group of educators who continue to serve students and young people in the United States through the education profession.

North Central takes lead in national curriculum research

New national academic standards aim to raise the achievement of K-12 students in the United States to a world-class level. And North Central will play a lead role in helping teachers at high-need schools better prepare students for more rigorous standards in mathematics.

Alumnus lectures, performs in Beijing and is guest on WONC

Musician, world traveler Mike Krieglstein ’10 is lecturer at university in Beijing and guest artist with WONC’s music night series Tuesday, Feb. 7.

Musician, world traveler and 2010 alumnus Mike Krieglstein will be the featured guest artist Feb. 7 as part of WONC’s Tuesday music night series. Listen to WONC-FM 89.1 from 6 to 8 p.m. to hear a live interview with Krieglstein about his recent adventures in China where he gave a lecture and performed. After the radio interview, Krieglstein will give a free live concert at 8 p.m. in the basement of the Rolland Center Boilerhouse Café.

Local educator, literacy expert to speak Jan. 25 at North Central College

Local elementary school teacher and Illinois’ Reading Educator of the Year Maria Walther will speak at North Central College Jan. 25.

Local elementary school teacher, education expert and literacy consultant Maria Walther will speak at North Central College on Wednesday, Jan. 25. Her talk will take place at 5:30 p.m. in room 20 at the College’s Goldspohn Hall, 31 N. Loomis St., Naperville. The event is free and open to the public.

“Maria Walther is an extremely reliable and interesting speaker and often provides a variety of resources,” says Alyssa Mahoney, a North Central junior majoring in elementary education. “We cannot get enough of what she has to say!”
