Karl Kelley and students to present paper at psychology convention

Karl Kelley, professor and chair of psychology, and psychology majors Camille Heneghan ’10 and Lyndsey Pojman ’12 have co-authored a paper, titled “Status and Success: Perceptions of Employees Requesting Family Leave Using Video Vignettes,” which has been accepted for presentation at the 2010 >Association for Psychological Science (APS) Annual Convention May 27-30 in Boston.

The National Science Fondation awarded Stephen Maynard Caliendo, associate professor of at North Central College, and his partner a grant for a study on race.

Stephen Maynard Caliendo, associate professor of political science at North Central College, and Charlton McIlwain of New York University have been awarded a $21,000 grant by Time-Sharing Experiments for the Social Sciences (TESS) and funded by National Science Foundation for their project, “The Effects of Racial and Racist Appeals on White Voters.”

Heather Coon, associate professor of psychology, and Fukumi Matsubara, professor of Japanese, co-presented a research paper titled “Can a Reparation Offer Function as an Apology?” at the 11th annual meeting of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology on Jan. 28 in Las Vegas.

Katlyn Humphrey, a senior from Lisle, has received the Psi Chi National Service Award. Psi Chi, the international honor society in psychology, recognizes students who contribute in an exceptional way to meeting a local chapter’s goals and the societal aims of the organization.

Nicole Allgood gives presentation at research conference

Nicole Allgood, visiting lecturer of psychology, gave a presentation titled “The Perspective of Young Adult Siblings of Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders: An Exploration of Themes of Grief and Loss” at the Midwest Educational Research Association conference in St. Louis on Oct. 15.

New tenure-track faculty

North Central College appointed three new full-time, tenure-track faculty for the 2009-2010 academic year. They are: • Alberto Fonseca, assistant professor of Spanish. Previously a graduate teaching assistant at the University of Kansas and at Virginia Tech, Fonseca specializes in 19th and 20th century Latin American literature and instruction in Spanish at all levels. He holds a B. A. in literature from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, an M.A. in history from Virginia Tech and a Ph.D.

A Culture of Inquiry

One of the key goals of North Central College’s 2007-2012 Strategic Plan is to foster “a culture of inquiry” in which intellectually ambitious students can advance as far as their motivation and curiosity will take them.
