Jacob Hubert '98

Jacob Hubert was named principal of North Boone High School in Poplar Grove, IL. He’s served as assistant principal at the school for the past five years and will begin as principal at the start of the 2012-2013 school year. He holds bachelor’s degrees in sports medicine and athletic training from North Central and in mathematics from Illinois State University. He earned a master’s degree in educational administration from Eastern Illinois University.

2012 Goldwater Scholar, Maria Gommel

Maria Gommel ’13 has been named a 2012 Goldwater Scholar, the highest national undergraduate award for achievement in math, science and engineering. Gommel is majoring in actuarial science and mathematics and intends to pursue a doctorate in mathematics after graduation.

Nicole Rivera, North Central College adjunct assistant professor of psychology, presented a session titled “Learning Disabilities: Implications for Learning, Self and Behavior” for instructors at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago on March 25. The session was part of a joint meeting between the Old Town School of Folk Music and the Illinois Association for Music Therapy.

Sophomore psychology major Joshua Male was featured in the SouthtownStar newspaper, which recounted his recent experience in Haiti.

In December, Male spent eight days in Haiti with Mission of Hope, where he gained experience painting houses, clearing trash from streets and comforting patients in a prosthetic lab.

16 North Central student broadcasters earn nominations in national competition

Sixteen North Central College broadcasters representing WONC-FM 89.1 have earned 12 nominations in an annual national competition.

Feb. 7, 2012—Sixteen North Central College broadcasters representing WONC-FM 89.1, the College’s student-run radio station, have earned 12 nominations in an annual national competition sponsored by the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS).

Winners of the Golden Microphone Trophy Awards will be announced March 2-4 at the 72nd Annual IBS International Radio/Webcast Conference in New York City. Last year, North Central students brought home first-place awards for Best Sports Play-by-Play and Best Documentary at the 2011 IBS awards.

For third straight year, a record number of students will represent North Central College at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR).

For the third consecutive year, a record number of students from North Central College will participate in the nation’s leading conference on undergraduate research.

Forty-five students will represent North Central at the annual National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) March 29-31 at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. No other college or university in Illinois will send more students to this prestigious conference.

Film and panel highlight Education Under Fire in Iran

Iran and right to education are focus of Jan. 31 panel and film “Education Under Fire” as part of the College’s emphasis on human rights.

Iran will be the focus of the North Central College event, “Education Under Fire,” on Jan. 31 as part of the College’s emphasis on global human rights.

At the request of North Central senior psychology major Mozhdeh Khodarahmi, the Office of International Programs is presenting the film “Education Under Fire” and panel discussion from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, in Smith Hall at Old Main.

North Central hosts 2012 Blue Key National Conference

More than 100 students from across the country traveled to North Central College for the 2012 Blue Key National Conference, which took place Jan. 13-14.

The students represented 13 different colleges and universities, ranging from the University of Portland in Oregon to Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania. Over the course of the conference, students had the opportunity to participate in a vast array of activities.
