Gerald Gems, professor of health and physical education, gave a presentation titled “Running with the Bulls: An Autoethnographic Account of Reliving the Past” at the North American Society for Sport History Convention in Orlando, Fla., on May 29. He also gave a presentation titled “Sport, Education, and American Manifest Destiny” at the International Society for the History of Physical Education and Sport in Netanya, Israel, on June 4.

The Cardinal men’s track and field team claimed the final jewel of a rare triple crown May 29 as the team protected a huge early lead and won the program’s 20th national title at the 2010 NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships. The victory makes North Central just the second team in Division III history to sweep the national cross country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field championships in one academic year.

Gerald Gems, professor of health and physical education, gave a radio interview for WDCB Du Page Public Radio on “Chicago's Failed Olympic Bid,” broadcast Oct. 2, 5 and 9. In addition, he gave a presentation titled “Sport, Politics and American Globalization” at the University of Copenhagen Summer School for graduate students on Aug. 21. He also delivered a keynote address titled “Past, Present, Future: The Cultural Power of Sport” at the first annual International Sociology of Sport Conference hosted by the National Sport University in Taipei, Taiwan, on Sept. 25.

Gerald Gems, professor of health and physical education, has had a number of recent publications. His book titled Understanding American Sports, which he co-authored with Gertrud Pfister of the University of Copenhagen, was published in July by Routledge. His chapter titled “Sport Historians, the City, and the New Social History” was published in Routledge Companion to Sports History (London) by Steven Pope and John Nauright, eds.
