Wis, North Central College’s Mimi Rolland Professor in the Fine Arts and professor and chair of music, gave an in-service workshop presentation titled “Best Practices in the Choral/General Music Classroom” for the vocal/general music teachers in Naperville Community Unit School District 203 on  March 2.

Mallett, a Maine-based artist whose career spans nearly 40 years, will perform at 8 p.m. Friday, May 4, in North Central College’s theatre at Meiley-Swallow Hall, 31 S. North Central College’s Jan Fitzsimmons honored by education professionals

Educator Janis Fitzsimmons is being honored by peers for helping prepare young teachers to pursue careers serving children in high-need schools.

Feb. 21, 2012—North Central College educator Janis Fitzsimmons is being honored by peers for her achievements in helping prepare young teachers to pursue careers serving children in high-need schools.

Fitzsimmons will receive recognition April 16 during the annual Honoring the Profession gala hosted by School of Education at Dominican University. The gala recognizes a select group of educators who continue to serve students and young people in the United States through the education profession.

North Central faculty present instrumental recital

College music faculty play trombone, alto and soprano saxophone, the euphonium and piano in instrumental faculty recital Feb. 17 in Wentz Concert Hall.

North Central College music faculty will present an instrumental faculty recital at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, in Wentz Concert Hall.

Jonathon Kirk, assistant professor of music, will play the euphonium and trombone, and Lawrence Van Oyen, professor of music and director of bands, will play alto saxophone. They will be accompanied by other North Central faculty—Joann Cho and Jon Warfel on piano and Mitch Paliga on soprano saxophone. Admission is free.

North Central College Professor of Music Lawrence Van Oyen and Lecturer of Music Jon Warfel perform in “Saxophonia II” at Eastern Michigan University.

Lawrence Van Oyen, professor of music and director of bands, and Jon Warfel, lecturer in music, performed in a program titled “Saxophonia II” at Eastern Michigan University Feb. 3. The event’s theme focused on World War II and included 15 performances by nine different musicians.

North Central takes lead in national curriculum research

New national academic standards aim to raise the achievement of K-12 students in the United States to a world-class level. And North Central will play a lead role in helping teachers at high-need schools better prepare students for more rigorous standards in mathematics.
