Samuel Jaros earns 2012 Outstanding Major in Economics Award

Samuel Jaros of Naperville was awarded the 2012 Outstanding Major in Economics Award during Honors Day May 15 at North Central College.

May 22, 2012—Samuel Jaros of Naperville was awarded the 2012 Outstanding Major in Economics Award during Honors Day May 15 at North Central College.

Jaros is a senior with majors in four areas: mathematics, finance, economics and actuarial science. He is the son of Gary and Nicholette Jaros and a graduate of Waubonsie Valley High School.

Jonathan Rascher earns Outstanding Majors in Computer Science, Mathematics awards

Jonathan Rascher of Bartlett was recognized with two academic awards during Honors Day May 15 at North Central College.

May 17, 2012—Jonathan Rascher of Bartlett was recognized with two academic awards during Honors Day May 15 at North Central College.

Rascher earned two department honors, the 2012 Outstanding Major in Computer Science Award and the 2012 Outstanding Major in Mathematics Award. In addition to double-majoring in computer science and mathematics, Rascher is earning a minor in interactive media studies when he graduates from the College in June.

Jackie Murawska, North Central College adjunct instructor of mathematics, led a workshop titled “Fractions, Frustration, Ratios, and the Condominium Community Problem” for middle school teachers at the Metropolitan Mathematics Club of Chicago (MMC) Conference of Workshops held in New Lenox, Ill., Jan. 28.

North Central College’s Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) joined forces with employee volunteers at Lowe’s Naperville home improvement retail store to create a self-sustaining, organic garden for immigrant residents associated with the nonprofit Emmanuel House CDC.

Gaylen Brubaker '72

Gaylen Brubaker is vice president, technical director-groundwater remediation for AECOM, based in Raleigh, NC. He has 28 years’ experience and has been the technical lead on remedy selection and associated regulatory negotiations for many high-profile sites, including those containing coal tar residuals, petroleum products, creosote, chlorinated solvents and petrochemical wastes. He also develops and interprets laboratory results and pilot design studies.

Scott R. Daly '06

Scott R. Daly accepted a tenure-track faculty position in the department of chemistry at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and will begin in July. He was awarded a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in May 2010 and received the Department of Chemistry’s Theron Standish Piper Award for outstanding thesis research. After graduating, he became a Seaborg Postdoctoral Fellow at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, NM, and performed research to develop new methods to improve the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel.

2012 Goldwater Scholar, Maria Gommel

Maria Gommel ’13 has been named a 2012 Goldwater Scholar, the highest national undergraduate award for achievement in math, science and engineering. Gommel is majoring in actuarial science and mathematics and intends to pursue a doctorate in mathematics after graduation.

Learn lessons of calculus with humor and music

North Central College hosts “Calculus: the Musical!”—a comic and memorable review of the concepts and history of calculus—on April 3.

“Calculus: The Musical!”—a comic review of the concepts and history of calculus—returns April 3 to North Central College as part of a national tour.

Using musical parodies that span genres from light opera to hip-hop, the show is a blend of sketch comedy, musical theatre and classroom lecture. All this makes the learning of calculus fun and entertaining.
