Gerald Gems, North Central College professor of health and physical education, recently published articles in various journals and delivered presentations.

Gems’ article, titled “Sport, Democracy, and the Americanization of Italian Americans,” was published by the History Research Journal, 2:5 (Summer 2012), pp. 349-354.

Oesterle Library features new lobby exhibits

The scholarship of President Troy Hammond and publications by various members are featured during winter term in the Oesterle Library lobby exhibits.

Each term Oesterle Library presents new and timely exhibits in its lobby. Winter term’s exhibits feature the scholarship of Dr. Troy Hammond and publications by various faculty members.

As Dr. Troy Hammond begins his tenure as the College’s 10th president, a special exhibit will showcase his scholarship throughout his career.

Curtis Hudson '88

Curtis Hudson was named principal of Charles Reed Elementary School in Plainfield, IL. This is his sixth year in Plainfield School District 202. He resides in Aurora, IL, with his wife and daughter, age 4.

Steve Joslyn '86

Steve Joslyn was named head baseball coach at Chicago State University after spending the last 10 years as an assistant at Northern Illinois University under Ed Mathey ‘86. As NIU’s main assistant, Joslyn earned the title of associate head coach in 2008. His efforts at NIU helped the Huskies bring in three nationally ranked recruiting classes to DeKalb. Overall, Joslyn helped the Huskies to 255 victories and five Mid-American Conference Tournament appearances. Nearly every graduating outfielder tutored by Joslyn at Northern Illinois has signed a professional baseball contract.

North Central alumna Karen Popovich named 2012 Illinois Art Educator of the Year

The Illinois Art Education Association has named North Central College alumna Karen Popovich the 2012 Illinois Art Educator of the Year.

The Illinois Art Education Association (IAEA) has named North Central College alumna Karen Popovich the 2012 Illinois Art Educator of the Year.

Popovich, of Aurora, teaches at Indian Prairie School District 204’s Metea Valley High School in Aurora. She earned her bachelor’s degree in studio art from North Central College in 1996.

The annual award recognizes the exemplary contributions, service and achievements of an outstanding IAEA member. The award will be presented at the IAEA conference in Lisle on Nov. 2.

Tammy Wynard, North Central College visiting instructor of health and physical education and coordinator of health education, presents twice at conference.

Tammy S. Wynard, North Central College visiting instructor of health and physical education and coordinator of health education, presented twice at the annual American School Health Association conference in San Antonio, Texas, Oct. 10-13. The conference brought together professionals working in higher education, K-12 schools, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as pre-service teachers and school nurses.

Survey finds North Central College graduates among highest income-earners

Graduates of North Central College earn more income over their lifetimes than peers who graduate from most comparable schools, a new survey finds.

North Central College ranks among the top 15 percent of private, nonprofit schools in the 2011-2012 survey by Payscale.com. The mid-career median salary for North Central College graduates is $81,300, ranking No. 39 out of 303 schools in the private, nonprofit category.

Natalie’s interests—athletics, health, coaching, teaching—are central in her academic and career choices. “I knew I wanted to teach physical education at the middle-school level. Adding the health endorsement gives me different experiences than being in the classroom and the gym and opens additional career options.”

Health, says Natalie, is a required subject and won’t be eliminated in schools. It focuses on nutrition, stress management, environmental health and more. Having a health endorsement opens doors to teach community health at a health department, a rehab program, service center or other health-related area.

“North Central’s health education program requires 150 hours of field experience. That’s a lot. And I feel I’m better prepared than friends in similar programs at other schools.” Natalie hopes to eventually create her own health curriculum with content that’s informative, relevant and relatable to students.

North Central College is ranked No. 13 in the Midwest in the Regional Universities category—schools that offer a full range of undergraduate and master’s degrees. North Central College was ranked No. 23 among Midwest Regional Universities for 2012.
