North Central College seniors Elisabeth Volkamer and Jessica Martin are chosen for internship in Nashville that empowers women to promote social justice.

North Central College seniors Elisabeth Volkamer and Jessica Martin were accepted to a 10-month internship at Belle H. Bennett House, an intentional community for the empowerment of young women at Scarritt-Bennett Center in Nashville, TN.

The program, beginning in August, consists of 40-hour work weeks that focus on female empowerment and the eradication of racism through volunteer work, community living and internships at various organizations in the area.

National Conferences on Undergraduate Research accepts 32 proposals by 34 students, placing North Central in nation’s top 5 percent for most acceptances.

North Central College students will showcase their original research in biology, chemistry, psychology, literature, the arts and other fields at the National Conferences on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) in April.

NCUR has accepted 32 proposals by 34 North Central students for presentation at its annual conference. NCUR promotes research, scholarship and creative activity in all fields of study and accepts only top submissions by undergraduate students.

North Central College alumnus Dr. Karl Brooks speaks at MLK prayer breakfast

Alumnus Karl Brooks ’90, a Joliet Junior College administrator, was keynote speaker at the College’s MLK prayer breakfast.

North Central College alumnus Dr. Karl Brooks ’90 spoke to students, faculty, staff and guests about the importance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy during the College’s annual MLK prayer breakfast Jan. 21.

Dean of student success at Joliet Junior College, Brooks encouraged audience members to reflect on what inspires them—saying King’s legacy is a source of daily inspiration to him.

“We are all benefactors of Martin Luther King’s legacy,” Brooks said. “He calls us all to a higher moral and ethical ground.”

Survey finds North Central College graduates among highest income-earners

Graduates of North Central College earn more income over their lifetimes than peers who graduate from most comparable schools, a new survey finds.

North Central College ranks among the top 15 percent of private, nonprofit schools in the 2011-2012 survey by Payscale.com. The mid-career median salary for North Central College graduates is $81,300, ranking No. 39 out of 303 schools in the private, nonprofit category.

Coming from a small town like Industry, IL, Candice fell in love with everything downtown Naperville had to offer. “North Central’s small school size, set in a city like Naperville, was perfect for me.”

Since arriving on campus, Candice has met her best friends and added Gender and Women’s Studies as a minor after taking GWS 100. She recommends this course to anyone who wants to explore a challenging topic. “This course brought up topics you would never consider related to gender,” she says.

To gain experience in the field, Candice is collaborating with a professor on research related to the portrayal of women in the media. “I’m majoring in interactive media studies and would love to tie my major and minor together and convey women in a positive light while working in the media. The professors here are so willing to help and really care about your learning experience.”
