Publication profiles English professor Zachary Jack on eve of author's talk

The River Cities Reader recently profiled Associate Professor of English Zachary Jack in a piece that talked about how he is a descendant of seven generations of families in Iowa.

Jack will deliver an author’s talk and read from his creative-nonfiction book “Native Soulmate” (scheduled for September release) at the Bettendorf Public Library on Thursday, July 21.

Zachary Jack, associate professor of English, writes “Let There Be Pebble: A Middle-Handicapper’s Year in America’s Garden of Golf” after yearlong research.

June 28, 2011—Associate Professor of English Zachary Michael Jack released his latest work, “Let There be Pebble: A Middle-Handicapper’s Year in America’s Garden of Golf,” in May 2011 by University of Nebraska Press. His yearlong research for the book about the famed oceanside Pebble Beach golf course culminated in on-site coverage of the U.S. Open on the 10th anniversary of Tiger Woods’s unprecedented win in 2000.

Students’ outdoor assignment for environmental studies class changes their view

Students in the Environmental Studies 120, People and Nature class, tend campus garden and landscaping as part of class work and learn more than gardening.

Josh Bailey is the 2011 Outstanding Senior Man

Future law student Josh Bailey is named the College’s Outstanding Senior Man, the highest award presented to a male member of the Class of 2011.

June 3, 2011—Joshua Bailey, a North Central College senior majoring in English writing and political science, was named the College’s Outstanding Senior Man, the highest award presented to a member of the Class of 2011.

A Galesburg, Ill., resident, he is the son of Brian and Patty Bailey and a graduate of Galesburg High School.

The Outstanding Senior Man award was presented in May at North Central College’s Honors Convocation, an annual spring event that recognizes student excellence in academics and co-curricular activities.

Jane Anderson Clark was named vice president, member services, for NationaLease, one of the largest full-service truck leasing organizations in North America. In her new position, she’ll manage the entire member services operation, as well as work to strengthen member relationships, reduce member costs and improve collaboration within the NationaLease supporting groups. Before joining NationaLease, she served as area vice president for Randstad, one of the nation’s largest recruitment agencies.

One-man show features works by Molière, Shakespeare May 9

North Central welcomes performer Timothy Mooney, who will give a one-man dramatic presentation of his two shows “Molière Than Thou” and “Lots O’ Shakespeare” at 7 p.m. Monday, May 9, in Koten Chapel. This event is free and hosted by Cultural Events.

King’s short story wins contest and publication

Patricia King, adjunct assistant professor English, won the Kore Press 2011 Short Fiction Award for her short story “The Death of Carrie Bradshaw.”

Patricia King, adjunct assistant professor English, won the Kore Press 2011 Short Fiction Award for her short story “The Death of Carrie Bradshaw.” Kore Press, a publishing company geared toward works by women of diversity, will publish her story as a chapbook in fall 2011.

King’s short story recognized in two contests

Patricia Grace King, adjunct assistant professor of English, and her short story “The Death of Carrie Bradshaw” received honorable mention and finalist awards.

Patricia Grace King, adjunct assistant professor of English, submitted her short story titled “The Death of Carrie Bradshaw” to the 2010 Dana Award, which recognizes and rewards excellent fiction and poetry. Her story was named the Second Honorable Mention Dana Award for Short Fiction.

International programs hosts symposium with speakers, faculty panels

North Central presents “Contemporary India and the Environment” symposium on April 14 as part of yearlong international focus on India, the environment.

April 6, 2011—As part of its yearlong international focus, North Central College will present a symposium titled “Contemporary India and the Environment” on Thursday, April 14.

Guest speakers and North Central faculty and students will give presentations. An Indian dance performance and Indian supper are also part of the symposium, presented by the College’s Office of International Programs.

English major accepts position with Teach for America program
