Will is enjoying all the perks of a small school as he pursues physics and engineering degrees through North Central’s dual-degree program. A member of the Cardinals football team, he tackles difficult physics and math problems in small classroom settings and forms close relationships with many of his professors.

“It’s a lot easier to learn when you can talk to professors after class or meet with them during office hours,” he says.

Thanks to North Central’s location, Will is able to intern as a technician at Argonne National Laboratory. Many of his classmates are taking advantage of similar opportunities.

“You can also apply for internships at Fermilab or some of the engineering companies around Naperville,” he says.

North Central College students will discuss their scholarly work Aug. 1 during the poster session of the 2013 Summer Undergraduate Research Colloquium (SURC).

The SURC poster session takes place from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 1 in Smith Hall of Old Main, 30 N. Brainard St. (The session previously was scheduled to take place in Heininger Auditorium at the Larrance Academic Center). Most of the 40 students who participated in the 2013 SURC will be present.

Student researchers test out newly renovated science research lab

A new research lab in North Central College’s Kroehler Science Center is designed to encourage greater collaboration among students and faculty.

A Kroehler Science Center lab that has been home to dozens of student and faculty research projects  now boasts a renovated interior that’s more conducive to collaboration and long-term projects. The lab was completely gutted to redesign the space and accommodate new flooring, updated furnishings and improved storage and shelving.

“It’s much easier to collaborate with people from different labs and overall, everything is much more organized,” says Scott Blaszak ’14, a biology major. “The redesigned space is better situated for conducting research.”

North Central College to host Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering competition

North Central College will host sectional contest March 14 in the Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) Academic Challenge.

North Central College on March 14 will host sectional competition in the Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) Academic Challenge.

The Academic Challenge is a competitive series of tests created and administered by WYSE and offered to high school students in Illinois and Missouri. This competition has been hosted by North Central College for more than 10 years and is designed to present a challenge to the brightest students.

Survey finds North Central College graduates among highest income-earners

Graduates of North Central College earn more income over their lifetimes than peers who graduate from most comparable schools, a new survey finds.

Graduates of North Central College earn more income over their lifetimes than peers who graduate from most comparable schools, a new survey finds.

North Central College ranks among the top 15 percent of private, nonprofit schools in the 2011-2012 survey by Payscale.com. The mid-career median salary for North Central College graduates is $81,300, ranking No. 39 out of 303 schools in the private, nonprofit category.

Nathan wanted a college where he could play football and pursue a degree in mechanical engineering. He found both at North Central.

“I knew there was a 100 percent transfer rate for the engineering program because they prepare students so well here.”

A member of the football team, Nathan has built a strong relationship with the team’s faculty mentor, who’s also a professor of chemistry and physics and Nathan’s academic advisor. “I see him all the time. It’s amazing how willing he is to help with internships and classes, and he’ll send me emails out of the blue about opportunities.”

Outside football, Nathan participates in Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Focus, a student-led worship group, and serves as a resident assistant.

“At North Central, everyone wants you to be involved … there’s no way not to be part of something.”
