North Central College alumna Stephanie Theis ’05 Hawkins, a second-grade teacher at Lynne Thigpen Elementary School in Joliet, Ill., was recognized for her teaching with a 2012-2013 Milken Educator Award.

A school-wide assembly was called on April 12, and students and teachers were told it would feature a member of the Illinois State Board of Education. What Hawkins did not realize, however, was that she would be presented with the Milken Educator Award for excellence in the education profession.

North Central’s Tyson Education Center to benefit from local 5K

North Central College’s Tyson Education Curriculum Resource Center to benefit from funds raised at Metea Valley High School 5K run/walk on June 1.

North Central College’s Dr. Lora L. Tyson Education Curriculum Resource Center will benefit from proceeds of a local 5K run/walk this June. The 5K event will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 1, and feature professional distance runner Adam Goucher, along with students, staff and families of Metea Valley High School in Aurora, Ill.

Jaclyn Murawska, North Central College adjunct instructor of mathematics, received an award from Northern Illinois University for her recent research.

Jaclyn Murawska, North Central College adjunct instructor of mathematics, received the Merlyn J. Behr Award in Mathematics Education from Northern Illinois University and its Department of Mathematical Sciences. The award recognizes Murawska’s significant contribution to the field of mathematics education for her dissertation research, “Preservice Elementary School Teachers’ Conceptual Understanding of Place Value Within a Constructivist Framework.”

Six North Central College students studying physical and health education were invited to present at the DuPage Regional Office of Education County Institute Day held at Naperville North High School on March 1. The students presented to K-12 educators as part of the Physical Education, Health Education and Driver Education DuPage County Institute sessions.

Cory Schillerstrom was accepted into the Peace Corps and will depart for Tonga September 5 to begin training as an English education volunteer. During the first three months of her service in Tonga, she will complete technical, language, health and safety training while living with a host family to become fully immersed in the country’s language and culture. After she is assigned to a community, she will work on sustainable, community-driven development projects that help the people of Tonga and Tongan

Joanna Bourque was a designer for the DuPage Children’s Museum’s M.A.S.K. Project to celebrate its 25th anniversary. The project supported the museum’s mission to stimulate curiosity, creativity and problem-solving in children. Professional artists designed more than 100 masks autographed by 65 celebrities, and the masks were auctioned off online. Before becoming a teacher, Bourque served as a school programs and exhibits specialist with the DuPage Children’s Museum. She is an elementary school art teacher at Spring Brook Elementary in Naperville.

North Central College was honored for engaging its students, faculty and staff in meaningful service that achieves measurable results in the community.
