Heidi Nelson ’15, daughter of David and Sandra Nelson, of Carol Stream, Ill., was awarded the Outstanding Major in Elementary Education, Outstanding Major in Spanish and Outstanding Student in the Arts and Letters Division awards during Honors Day 2015 in May at North Central College. She also was named the 2015 Outstanding Senior Woman.

North Central College is among just 86 institutions nationwide recognized in The Chronicle’s eighth annual report on The Academic Workplace. The recognition is based on results of surveys of more than 44,000 employees at 281 colleges and universities.

Junior/Senior Scholars learn STEM concepts from North Central College students

North Central College education students gained valuable classroom experience teaching STEM concepts to youngsters in the Junior/Senior Scholars program.

Kailey Robbins, a North Central College senior, spent part of her summer working with youngsters enrolled in the College’s Junior/Senior Scholars program. As an elementary education major pursuing a math endorsement and a minor in Spanish, Robbins and others gained valuable classroom teaching STEM concepts to youngsters.

“I learned everything from classroom management to lesson planning,” says Robbins, a Hartland, Wis., resident who also plays lacrosse. This was her second summer participating in the Junior/Senior Scholars program, which is in its 28th year.

The hundreds of faculty candidates who’ve visited campus the past 20 years typically ended their interviews in the office of R. Devadoss Pandian, vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty. In his fifth floor office of Old Main, they all learned about his passion for teaching—and the No. 1 qualification for working at North Central College.

“You have to teach to every student in the class and in a class of 30 or 35 students, that’s not a small thing,” says Pandian, describing the qualities of a great teacher.

Caitlin Skrbec ’15, daughter of Bradford and Eileen Skrbec of Naperville, was awarded the Outstanding Major in Music Education Award during Honors Day in May at North Central College.  

A graduating senior, Caitlin majored in choral and instrumental music education at North Central College. She is a graduate of Neuqua Valley High School.

The annual awards recognize one senior man and one senior woman for their successes in the classroom, their involvement and contributions to the campus community outside the classroom, and their future potential.

North Central College has launched its Brilliant Future Campaign—a seven-year, $150 million drive that is the largest fundraising effort in the College’s 154-year history.

Nearly 1,000 students, alumni, trustees, faculty and staff gathered with local and regional elected officials, business leaders and other dignitaries May 15 at a kickoff celebration in the College’s Residence Hall/Recreation Center.
