Three faculty and student publish book reviews

Faculty Sheryl Finkle, Jerry Gems, Zachary Jack and graduate student Stephanie Salerno have book reviews published in “Journal of Sport History.”

Three North Central faculty and one graduate student had book reviews published in the fall 2010 issue of the “Journal of Sport History,” 37:3. Sheryl Finkle, professor of education, reviewed “The Ohio State University at the Olympics: A Biographical Dictionary of Athletes, Alternates, Administrators, Coaches and Trainers” by Rusty Wilson; Gerald Gems, professor of health and physical education, reviewed “The Empire Strikes Out: How Baseball Sold U.S.

Ressler gives talks at national conferences

Mary Beth Ressler, assistant professor of education, gave three presentations based on her research to national education and reading conferences.

Mary Beth Ressler, assistant professor of education, gave a presentation at the National Council of Teachers of English Assembly for Research (NCTEAR) Feb. 19 in Madison, Wis. Her presentation was based on her research on adolescents’ identity performances during literacy practices and surrounds the importance of attending to complex identity work and its inherent relation to literacy work. She also presented at the National Reading Convention in December 2010 on similar research and at the National Council of Teachers of English in November on using dramatic inquiry in K-12 classrooms.

Murawska leads workshop

Jackie Murawska, adjunct instructor of mathematics, led a workshop at the Metropolitan Mathematics Club of Chicago Conference.

Feb. 18, 2011—Jackie Murawska, adjunct instructor of mathematics, led a workshop titled “Investigations Using Inductive Reasoning: Adding Excitement to the Standard Curriculum” for middle school teachers at the Metropolitan Mathematics Club of Chicago (MMC) Conference of Workshops on Feb. 5 in Lincolnshire, Ill. This is Murawska’s third year as half-time faculty in the mathematics department.

Successful Snow Bowl raises funds for Tyson Center

Some 150 people, including faculty, students, alumni and friends from the community, gathered Jan. 28 to hold a fundraiser in honor of Lora L. Tyson, former North Central College associate professor of education from 1999 to 2008.

Held at Naperville’s Brunswick Zone XL, the inaugural Snow Bowl included bowling, a billiards tournament and silent auction to raise funds to support and renovate the Dr. Lora L. Tyson Education Curriculum Resource Center.

Record number of students to present at national research conference

A record 38 students from various academic areas will represent North Central at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research this spring.

North Central College is offering a new option to earn both a bachelor’s degree and a master of leadership studies degree in just five years.

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (Nov. 16, 2010)—North Central College is offering a new option to earn both a bachelor’s degree and a master of leadership studies degree in just five years.

Students accepted into this program earn both a bachelor’s degree—in any discipline—and the master of leadership studies with the completion of 141 credit hours.
