Education majors create, teach summer school program

Fifth-grade teacher Kate Smith Pereda at Lincoln Elementary School in Addison, Ill., was concerned for her students who would be impacted by the summer school's cancellation. A 2005 graduate of North Central College, Pereda contacted her former education professor Maureen Kincaid at North Central asking for help.

Six North Central elementary education students took up a challenge from alumna Kate Smith ’05 Pereda, a fifth-grade elementary school teacher in Addison, to create and teach a summer school program at her high-needs school. “Kate contacted me last spring asking for help. Her district had canceled its summer school programs and she needed help with an alternative program,” said Maureen Kincaid, associate professor and chair of education. “Kate came to campus and spoke to our elementary education classes about the need.

Keating and Hyett inducted to Naperville's Heritage Hall of Honor

Ann Durkin Keating, Dr. C. Frederick Toenniges Professor of History, and Mary Kay Hyett, office manager, Office of Community Development, will be inducted to the Naperville Heritage Society’s Heritage Hall of Honor Sunday, Aug. 1, at 2 p.m. at Naper Settlement. The yearly recognition honors people and organizations that have made significant contributions to preserving the history of Naperville. Keating will be recognized for her historical contributions.

Junior/Senior Scholars prepare for college in summer camp

The 180 Junior/Senior Scholars will learn about money, stocks, bonds and credit; banks and the federal reserve during the summer program.

This summer, North Central College is home to 180 students, elementary through high school grades, from the East Aurora and Chicago communities and 17 college interns who serve as their teachers and mentors. They are part of the Junior/Senior Scholars, a college readiness academic summer program run by North Central College from June 14 to July 23.

Students serve summer long, around the world

From San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, to Nairobi, Kenya, to San Pablo City in the Philippines, North Central students wiill travel to do service projects.

Each summer, students at North Central College head to places around the world to serve alongside nonprofit organizations and people in disadvantaged communities. This summer, they'll work in three communities in Mexico, Kenya and the Philippines.

North Central friend and faculty member dies

Mary Lou Cowlishaw, who represented Naperville in the Illinois House of Representatives for nearly 20 years and has been an adjunct professor of education at North Central since 2003, died June 23 after a long and courageous bout with cancer. She was an architect of the Chicago school reform of 1995, the parent of two North Central graduates and a recipient of an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree from North Central in 1999. Faculty and students co-present at educators institute

Susan Mack, visiting instructor of education, and new graduates Sandy Moller ’10 and Jessica Mateo ’10 were co-presenters of a workshop titled “Preparing Teachers for Diversity in Classroom Management” at ACI’s Center for Success in High-Need Schools Summer Institute for Educators on June 18 at Trinity Christian College. Moller was the 2010 Outstanding Major in Spanish at North Central’s 2010 Honors Convocation and Mateo graduated with a degree in elementary education.

Education faculty present their model of collaborative leadership at conference

Associate professors of education Kristine Servais, Maureen Kincaid and Nancy Keiser presented a paper about their collaborative leadership model that was inspired by the late Lora Tyson and has been successfully integrated into the College’s teacher education program. They presented their paper at the Association of Teacher Educators Conference in Chicago in February and submitted it for publication to the journal of the National Council of Professors of Educational Administration. Seniors choose Susan Mack to give Last Lecture

North Central seniors voted to invite Susan Mack, visiting instructor of education, to present the CUAB-hosted Last Lecture to students at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 20, in Meiley-Swallow Hall. The entire campus community is invited. Her talk is titled “The Education of a Person: A Curricular Narrative.” Mack is a 1968 graduate of North Central College and has been a member of its faculty since 2005.
