Amy Krenn earns Outstanding Major in Biology Award

Amy Krenn was honored with the 2011 Outstanding Major in Biology Award during Honors Day May 17 at North Central College.

Amy Krenn was honored with the 2011 Outstanding Major in Biology Award during Honors Day May 17 at North Central College.

Krenn is a graduating senior majoring in biology with a minor in secondary education. At North Central in spring 2011, she participated in a Biology-Chemistry Interdisciplinary Seminar, presenting the paper, "The Effects of an Inquiry Based Saturday Science Program on the Interest Levels and Development of Science Processing Skills in Fourth and Fifth Grade Girls."

Cancer researcher returns to North Central to guest lecture science courses

Zach Pratt, a 2005 alumnus who recently completed his doctorate in cancer biology, returned to North Central to guest lecture some biology courses.

Zach Pratt hopes to combine his passion for scientific research with his knack for teaching.

Since earning his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from North Central in 2005, Pratt has completed his doctorate in cancer biology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He returned to North Central in February 2011 to guest lecture some biology courses, using bacteria to teach a lesson in evolution.

The Illinois Prairie Path Archives Open House takes place from 1 to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, in the lower level of North Central College’s Oesterle Library, 320 E. School St., Naperville.

North Central College alumnus receives medical college chapter’s highest honor

Kevin M. Klauer '87 has received the 2014 Bill Hall Award for Service from the Ohio chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians.

North Central College alumnus Kevin M. Klauer has received the 2014 Bill Hall Award for Service from the Ohio chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).

Klauer is chief medical officer at Emergency Medicine Physicians (EMP) in Canton, Ohio, where he has worked since 1999. He is also director of the Center for Emergency Medicine Education, ACEP council vice speaker and serves as medical editor-in-chief of the ACEP Now magazine, the college’s official publication.

Growing up in the Rocky Mountains, Valerie has always been fascinated with exploring ecosystems. North Central College allowed her love for nature to blossom.

As a first-year student, Valerie was awarded a summer internship to work on an ecology research project. She has been a lab assistant and became president of the biology honor society, Beta Beta Beta. She also interned in the water quality lab at the Springbrook Water Reclamation Center in Naperville.

Valerie credits her success to her strong ties with North Central College professors.

“You develop a bond with them,” she says. “Having such open and available communication with professors has helped me tremendously with my studies and has opened many doors for me.”

Valerie plans to attend graduate school after working in the field of biology.

Several North Central College faculty presented and coordinated the Associated Colleges of Illinois Summer Institute for Educators June 27.

North Central College hosted the Associated Colleges of Illinois (ACI) Summer Institute for Educators held June 27. North Central’s Jan Fitzsimmons, executive director of Urban Education Laboratory, coordinated the event and several of the College’s faculty presented sessions on various topics.   

Mary McMahon, associate professor of mathematics and mathematics education coordinator, copresented a session titled “Lesson Study: A Mathematics Tool for Teacher Collaboration in the Midst of the Common Core Standards.”
