Amy Krenn earns Outstanding Major in Biology Award

Amy Krenn was honored with the 2011 Outstanding Major in Biology Award during Honors Day May 17 at North Central College.

Krenn is a graduating senior majoring in biology with a minor in secondary education. At North Central in spring 2011, she participated in a Biology-Chemistry Interdisciplinary Seminar, presenting the paper, "The Effects of an Inquiry Based Saturday Science Program on the Interest Levels and Development of Science Processing Skills in Fourth and Fifth Grade Girls."

Cancer researcher returns to North Central to guest lecture science courses

Zach Pratt, a 2005 alumnus who recently completed his doctorate in cancer biology, returned to North Central to guest lecture some biology courses.

Zach Pratt hopes to combine his passion for scientific research with his knack for teaching.

Since earning his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from North Central in 2005, Pratt has completed his doctorate in cancer biology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He returned to North Central in February 2011 to guest lecture some biology courses, using bacteria to teach a lesson in evolution.

O’Connor coauthors study related to development of Parkinson’s

Christopher O’Connor, North Central College visiting assistant professor of biology, is coauthor of a study about a key protein in Parkinson’s disease.

Christopher O’Connor, North Central College visiting assistant professor of biology, is coauthor of a Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine study about Parkinson’s disease and how a protein in the disease acts like a virus.

The study was published April 25 in the journal PLOS ONE by virologist Edward Campbell, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Loyola’s Stritch School of Medicine, and colleagues.

DuPage County officials on May 30 presented the College with an Earth Flag. North Central is the first college or university in DuPage County to meet requirements needed to earn an Earth Flag.

Graduating student-veterans are standout students, leaders

North Central College’s graduating student-veterans James Davidson, Adam Doden and Wesley Sorrill are standout scholars, future leaders.

Three student-veterans—James Davidson, Adam Doden and Wesley Sorrill—are among some 730 students who will graduate from North Central College in 2013 and attend Commencement June 8.

Each veteran is a standout student. They are inductees to North Central’s SALUTE national honor society and were named the outstanding student in each of their academic majors at the College’s 2013 Honors Convocation.

Wesley Sorrill earns Outstanding Major in Biology Award

Wesley Sorrill received the Outstanding Major in Biology Award during the 2013 Honors Convocation at North Central College.

Wesley Sorrill, son of Liz and Stacy Sorrill of Naperville, was awarded the Outstanding Major in Biology Award during Honors Day May 14 at North Central College.

A senior, Wesley is majoring in biology at North Central College. He is a graduate of Wheaton North High School. Wesley’s name has regularly appeared on the Dean’s List.

A transfer student and a veteran, formerly with the U.S. Air Force, he will pursue an M.D. degree at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine.

Second annual Science Alumni Event hosts guest speaker Dr. Michael Chapman, Blake Young ’04 and Allison Beckham ’09 on their career experiences.

In what has become an annual tradition during Cornerstone Week, North Central hosted its second Science Alumni Event May 16. This year’s program featured guest speaker Michael Chapman, Ph.D., professor in the school of physics at Georgia Institute of Technology, and alumni Blake Young ’04 and Allison Beckham ’09.

North Central College President Troy D. Hammond is being honored by the National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellowship Program.

North Central College President Troy D. Hammond is one of only 60 outstanding alumni of the National Science Foundation’s highly competitive Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) to be honored and profiled by the prestigious organization upon the occasion of its 60th anniversary.
