North Central’s SEA Conference teaches entrepreneurs the business of arts

North Central College’s 13th annual Self Employment in the Arts (SEA) Conference Feb. 22-23 will help aspiring artists learn to become successful entrepreneurs.

The SEA Conference provides educational resources to help aspiring artists gain entrepreneurial knowledge and skills needed to establish and maintain careers as independent artists. The conference features performances, workshops, panel discussions and other activities tailored to actors, filmmakers, musicians, painters, sculptors, writers and other artists.

Karen Brady Popovich '96

Karen Brady Popovich was named the 2012 Illinois Art Educator of the Year by the Illinois Art Education Association (IAEA) and received the award at the IAEA conference in November. The annual award recognizes the exemplary contributions, service and achievements of an outstanding IAEA member. Popovich has taught at Metea Valley High School in Aurora, IL, since 2009. After majoring in studio art, she began her career 17 years ago at the elementary school level and then moved to the middle school level.

The exhibit is free and open to the public in the College’s Schoenherr Gallery at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave. A reception with artists will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17; complimentary refreshments will be served. The exhibit is sponsored by JP Morgan and the College’s Yellow Ribbon Program.

An artist reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9 for the Lee Benson exhibit “Immortality 10,000 Years” in Schoenherr Gallery.

Complimentary refreshments will be served at the reception in the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave. The exhibit closes Sunday, Nov. 11.

North Central alumna Karen Popovich named 2012 Illinois Art Educator of the Year

The Illinois Art Education Association has named North Central College alumna Karen Popovich the 2012 Illinois Art Educator of the Year.

The Illinois Art Education Association (IAEA) has named North Central College alumna Karen Popovich the 2012 Illinois Art Educator of the Year.

Popovich, of Aurora, teaches at Indian Prairie School District 204’s Metea Valley High School in Aurora. She earned her bachelor’s degree in studio art from North Central College in 1996.

The annual award recognizes the exemplary contributions, service and achievements of an outstanding IAEA member. The award will be presented at the IAEA conference in Lisle on Nov. 2.

Artists present papermaking workshop to connect veterans, civilians

North Central College’s art department will host the Combat Paper Project, a daylong artistic workshop involving veterans and artists, on Oct. 30.

North Central College’s art department will host the Combat Paper Project, an artistic collaboration initiated and presented by artists Drew Cameron and Drew Matott that involves veterans, artists and academic institutions.

Based out of art studios throughout the country, the Combat Paper Project comes to North Central’s studios and campus on Tuesday, Oct. 30. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in room 17 at Meiley-Swallow Hall, Cameron and Matott will demonstrate their project utilizing papermaking workshops to help veterans reconcile and share their personal experiences.

The “Mind and Body” exhibit is free, open to the public and on display Oct. 11 through Nov. 11 in the College’s Meiley-Swallow Hall Gallery, 31 S. Ellsworth St. The student artists will greet visitors during a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19; complimentary refreshments will be served.

William D. Soper, M.D. ’68  is a board-certified general surgeon with more than twenty five years of experience in the practice of general surgery. He received his medical degree from University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago and completed his surgical residency at the University of Illinois Medical Center.

Graduates of North Central College earn more income over their lifetimes than peers who graduate from most comparable schools, a new survey finds.

Graduates of North Central College earn more income over their lifetimes than peers who graduate from most comparable schools, a new survey finds.

North Central College ranks among the top 15 percent of private, nonprofit schools in the 2011-2012 survey by Payscale.com. The mid-career median salary for North Central College graduates is $81,300, ranking No. 39 out of 303 schools in the private, nonprofit category.
