A North Central College program that helps prepare future educators is serving as a model for a new program to improve opportunities for all the College’s first-generation students.

Teach First—which aims to recruit and retain first-generation college students who want to become teachers—was launched at North Central in 2008. Six years later it’s serving as a model for Cardinal First that launches in fall 2014.

North Central College will showcase a collection of works by Diana Leviton Gondek in “Insight / In Sight.”

Her free exhibit will present a variety of oil paintings June 27-Aug. 17 in the College’s Schoenherr Gallery at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave. The public is invited to meet the artist during a reception from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, June 29, in the gallery. Complimentary refreshments will be served.

Educators are among first to complete College’s new principal-preparation program

Six candidates are the first to complete North Central College’s newly redesigned principal-preparation program.

Heather Schild learned a lot about leadership and the responsibilities of being a school principal while she studied for her master’s degree in education (MAEd) at North Central College.

For two years while enrolled in North Central’s principal-preparation program, Schild worked as an Instructional Coordinator in Naperville Community Unit School District 203 and reported directly to Naperville North High School Principal Kevin Pobst.

“I thought North Central’s program was rigorous and provided a lot of authentic experiences,” Schild says.

Nine faculty receive tenure, promotions

The North Central College Board of Trustees grants tenure, approves promotions to faculty members effective with the start of the 2014-2015 academic year.

At its May 2014 meeting, the North Central College Board of Trustees granted tenure and approved promotions to several faculty members effective with the start of the 2014-2015 academic year in September. These faculty are:

Diane Anstine, Ph.D., was promoted to professor of economics

Michael de Brauw, Ph.D., was granted tenure and promoted to associate professor of classics

Shereen Ilahi, Ph.D., was granted tenure and promoted to associate professor of history

Wendy Koenig, Ph.D., was granted tenure

North Central College recognized Ian Wright as the Outstanding Senior Man and Christina Richardson as the Outstanding Senior Woman for 2014 during the College’s annual Honors Convocation on May 13.

The annual awards recognize one senior man and one senior woman for their successes in the classroom, their involvement and contributions to the campus community outside the classroom, and their future potential.

Wendy Koenig, North Central College associate professor of art history, recently had an article published in a book titled “The Transcultural Turn.”

Koenig’s article, titled “Motion and Sound: Investigating the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center,” evolved out of her 2010 presentation at an international conference on Transcultural Memory at the University of London.
