Sarah Lureau, assistant professor of accounting, and Alli Purcell Hayes, assistant professor of accounting, presented an active learning strategy, titled “Simulating ‘Real World’ Team Working Environments Within the Classroom,” at the annual Illinois Accounting Teachers Conference in Chicago Nov. 5.

David Gray, North Central College assistant professor of accounting, presented “Improving Students’ Understanding of Quality of Earnings and Footnote Disclosures Using Excel Analyses” at the American Accounting Association (AAA) Midwest Regional Conference’s Effective Learning Strategies Forum in Indianapolis on Oct. 14. AAA promotes worldwide excellence in accounting education, research and practice and is an organization of people interested in accounting education and research.

Joe Antonacci is the kind of person who puts his heart and soul into everything he does. Majoring in accounting, finance and economics, he’s worked for a financial planner at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney and as an intern in the corporate tax department at Walgreen’s corporate offices in Deerfield, IL. This winter he interned with PricewaterhouseCoopers in corporate audits, working 70 hours a week while taking a night class.

Joe spent a semester at a larger university before returning to the Naperville area where he went to high school. He’s enjoyed the academic, athletic and service opportunities at North Central. “I went on a Habitat for Humanity trip for athletes last spring and traveled to Guatemala with Enactus,” he says. “I was able to go on the trip last December after football finished in the playoffs. My professor made the reservation for me on Thanksgiving Day. You wouldn’t find that at a larger university.”

Aug. 18, 2011—Forbes magazine rates North Central College among “America’s Top Colleges.”

“Our annual list of America's best undergraduate institutions focuses on educational outcomes, not reputations,” Forbes writer Michael Noer says in the piece. “Our annual ranking of the 650 best undergraduate institutions focuses on the things that matter the most to students: quality of teaching, great career prospects, graduation rates and low levels of debt.”

SIFE students gain an appreciation for Hopi art while exploring new products for campus sales.

Three students who are active in Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) recently visited the Hopi School near the Grand Canyon in Arizona to learn more about Hopi art and build relationships that could result in the sale of products on campus. Arlinda Bajrami ’12, Katelyn Garris ’12, and Raine Tagare ’12, along with Matt Krystal, assistant professor of anthropology, and Gerald Thalman, associate professor of accounting, also helped dig a trench for electrical cable to power a new glassblowing studio.

Senior accounting majors sit for Ethics part of CPA Exam

For the third year, graduating accounting seniors take Ethics portion of CPA Exam and hear guest speaker discuss how to prepare for rest of exam.

On April 27, some 23 accounting graduating seniors took the Ethics portion of the five-part Uniform CPA Examination on campus. Typically, students don’t have an opportunity to take part of the CPA exam to become licensed as U.S. Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) before graduation. However, Assistant Professor of Accounting Sarah Lureau arranged the Ethics exam through her professional association with the Illinois CPA Society. Because North Central and the Illinois CPA Society co-sponsored the test, students received a discounted rate.

David Gray selected to write for C.P.A. exam

David Gray, assistant professor of accounting, was chosen to write test items for the Business and Economics Concepts section of the Uniform C.P.A. Examination.

David Gray, assistant professor of accounting, was selected to write test items for the Uniform C.P.A. Examination. In this role, he participated in training sessions and developed a series of questions for the Business and Economics Concepts section of the examination. Gray was recently notified that 95 percent of the questions he submitted have been accepted for use on future examinations. The overall acceptance rate for authors submitting test items is approximately 65 percent.

SIFE advances to national competition

North Central’s Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) team competed at the SIFE USA Regional Competition March 28 in Chicago, one of 12 regional sites. The College's team was named a champion in its league and advances to national competition May 10-12 in Minneapolis.
