The Outstanding Alumni Award is presented annually to one or more alumni who graduated more than 15 years ago, who have excelled in their careers, and who have demonstrated service to the community and to North Central College.

2013 Outstanding Alumni Award Recipients:

Soper

William D. Soper, M.D. ’68  is a board-certified general surgeon with more than twenty five years of experience in the practice of general surgery. He served as Director of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at the University of Illinois Medical Group and as Associate Director of Transplantation at Northwestern Memorial Hospital for 12 years.

Bartsch

Charlie Bartsch ’73 is Senior Advisor for Economic Development to EPA Assistant Administrator Mathy Stanislaus, charged with promoting inter-agency and public-private financing partnerships to spur land revitalization and site reuse. He has also been an EPA point person on the White House "Strong Cities/Strong Communities" recovery initiative, and on the Joint Initiative on Urban Sustainability Initiative with Brazil.

Hoeft

Steven H. Hoeft ’73 serves on North Central’s Board of Trustees. He is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP and is based in the Firm’s Chicago office.  He is the head of the Construction and Real Estate Litigation group.  His practice is focused on securities, commodities, product liability, intellectual property litigation, construction and real estate litigation.

Giannini

John Giannini ’84 began his head coaching career in 1989 at Rowan College in Glassboro, N.J. Within three years, Giannini coached the team to the NCAA Division III Final Four and to a national championship in 1996. He is currently the head coach for La Salle and led the team to its first appearance in the Sweet 16 since the 68-team format was introduced.

Smith Malone The Reverend Tracy Smith ’90 Malone was appointed Chicago southern district superintendent to the Northern Illinois Cabinet of the United Methodist Church. She became a probationary member of the conference in 1993 and has served in associate, pastor and senior pastor positions. She is serving her second term on the General Board of Church and Society.

Stumpenhorst

Josh Stumpenhorst ’03 was named the Illinois Teacher of the Year twice and recently met President Barack Obama. Stumpenhorst teaches sixth-grade Language Arts and Social Science at Lincoln Junior High in Naperville School District 203. He’s in his ninth year of teaching, coaches both basketball and track and is involved with the computer club.
