Culture and Society
The Culture and Society program is the most flexible option in the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) degree at North Central College. This program allows you to combine courses to create a curriculum specifically tailored to your needs and interests. In the past, students have created focused, individualized programs of study to:
- Enhance their abilities as teachers or as leaders in the community or in other professions, including nonprofit and advocacy work
- Prepare for further graduate study in areas such as law, English, history, cultural studies and anthropology
- Expand their intellectual horizons and abilities whatever their particular life circumstance or goal
The Culture and Society program allows you to take full advantage of the MALS degree’s unique combination of interdisciplinary, big-picture thinking and practical, everyday skills. While discovering how art, literature, history and the social and natural sciences combine to create a more holistic view of today’s most important issues, you’ll also hone skills you’ll use every day to communicate powerfully, think creatively and critically, and lead ethically.
Multiculturalism and diversity, gender and women’s studies, urban and suburban studies, ethics and the political process, the social consequences of new media, the history of science, the environment—you’ll be able to focus on these and many other issues to help further your individual goals.
