Parent/Guardian Orientation

Parent Orientation

Each spring term, the Office of International Programs (OIP) hosts a Parent Orientation for those parents who have students studying abroad the following year. Parents and guardians are encouraged to attend as the OIP staff addresses many main concerns and provides information regarding their son or daughter going abroad. Students are not invited to this orientation but are encouraged to help their parents navigate campus. A sample agenda of topics covered at the Parent Orientation includes:

• Study abroad the North Central College institutional mission

• Study abroad program overview

• Academic dimensions and components of study abroad

• Communication and communicating with your son/daughter abroad

• Money, banking, and financing study abroad

• Important dates and deadlines in the pre-study abroad process

• Health, safety, and insurance

In addition to a large presentation by the OIP staff addressing the items mentioned above, parents also meet with students who went on their son/daughter's program in the past during a breakout session. During this breakout session, parents have the opportunity to ask these 'returnees' all about their daughter/son's program, what it's like to travel abroad, academics at their son/daughter's host institution, health and safety in the host city/country, and anything else they are concerned about. Every year parents comment on the breakout session saying that it was the best part of this orientation. Our returnees are invaluable to the study abroad student (and parent!) experience.
