WONC

At WONC-FM 89.1, our award-winning radio station, you can learn the basics of broadcasting, develop skills in a variety of broadcast roles, and prepare yourself for a future in the field. WONC has earned the reputation as one of the top college radio stations in the nation.
WONC has received 20 Marconi College Radio Awards. No college or university radio station in the U.S. has won more. In addition, the station and its student DJ’s have earned a variety of other prestigious awards.
WONC is always on the air — 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The format is a blend of alternative, active and classic rock. Newscasts, sportscasts, traffic and weather reports are delivered by students throughout the day. WONC also broadcasts exclusive play-by-play of all North Central College football, men's and women's basketball, baseball and softball games, as well as selected high school contests. At specific times, you will also hear specialty music shows, as well as educational and public affairs programs.
As a staff member at WONC, you can assume a variety of on-air roles:
- music show host
- newscaster
- news reporter
- news magazine
- talk show host
- sportscaster
- sports reporter
- sports play-by-play announcer
- traffic reporter
Or behind-the-scenes positions:
- news writer
- copywriter
- music research specialist
- promotions assistant
- production assistant
- board operator
At WONC, it's possible to find a new student behind the microphone on the first day of classes, unlike other college radio stations where you may have to wait until your junior or senior year.
You'll also have the opportunity to work with cutting-edge technologies in any one of the WONC’s three state-of-the-art, stereo studios. You may find yourself operating AudioVAULT, broadcasting automation software; at the controls of the audio console; at a computer keyboard rewriting a news story fed directly from an Associated Press satellite; editing a traffic report from Metro Networks; or mixing music tracks on an Apple Mac with Pro Tools®, the industry’s top-rated editing software.
But better yet, see...or should we say, listen...for yourself. Visit WONC's official website and click on "Listen Live" to hear one of the country’ s premier college radio stations.
