Professional activities that will enrich your Education experience.

Junior/Senior Scholars When you take EDN 100: Introduction to Education, you participate in North Central’s highly acclaimed Junior/Senior Scholars program, where you can elect to tutor elementary, middle school, or high school students from high-need, inner-city school districts. During the rest of your program, you can continue to participate in other Junior/Senior Scholar’s activities, both during the school year and the summer.
SLATE (Student Leaders Association of Teacher Educators)
This is a student group for majors and minors in education. As a member of SLATE, you will develop and carry out special service projects and programs throughout the year. SLATE is affiliated with the Association of Teacher Educators, a national organization.
Next Level Foundation Mentoring Program
Touch a life and make a difference. This mentoring program supports local students in setting goals for academics, athletics and their future.
Teach First
Since the beginning of its 150-year history, North Central College has served students who are the first in their family to attend college. North Central launched the Teach First program in 2008. Teach First aims to recruit and retain first-generation students who want to become teachers, and then provides the mentorship and resources to launch students into a successful teaching career.

Buddy Reading Project
Learn to be a stronger teacher of reading. As an elementary education major, when taking EDN 362: Techniques in Elementary/Middle School Reading Instruction, you will partner with a student (or buddy) in a local elementary school and learn to use and apply reading strategies to help your buddy become a better reader.
Global Student Teaching
If you find the idea of student teaching in another country an interesting possibility, then you should explore this idea. There are over 50 countries to select from.
Job Fair
In the last year of your program, attend a job fair exclusively for students in the department’s teacher preparation program. The department and the Career Development Center jointly sponsor the job fair.
