Program and Degree Options

East Asian Studies Major (B.A.): The major is divided into a Japan Track and a China Track. All students must complete:

  • two years (18 credit hours) in the language of their chosen region
  • 21 credit hours in various aspects of East Asian history, religion, philosophy and culture, including EAS 165 Introduction to East Asia
  • at least one course on East Asian religion/philosophy
  • an additional course relevant to the study of East Asia
  • at least 6 credit hours in a study abroad program in East Asia
  • a 400-level independent research project that builds on previous coursework and the study-abroad experience

East Asian Studies Minor: The minor is also divided into a Japan Track and a China Track. Students must complete one year (9 credit hours) in the language of their chosen region, as well as 12 credit hours including EAS 165 Introduction to East Asia and three additional courses on the history, religion, philosophy and culture of the chosen region.
