STARTALK Program
A Chinese Immersion Experience

The STARTALK program is a federal government initiative to increase the number of young Americans learning and speaking critical need foreign languages by offering creative and engaging summer learning experiences.  In 2014 North Central College Chinese Program in conjunction with STARTALK will offer a free summer Chinese language program to 24 qualified participants for intensive language instruction and rich culture experiences.

Program Information

 
  • Classes meet daily from 9am-3pm, Monday-Friday
  • Open to incoming 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade high school students
  • Admission is selective.  Applicants are expected to demonstrate commitment to continue studying the language beyond the summer program

Features of the Program

 
  • No tuition or textbook costs for students
  • Successful STARTALK students will receive 3 transferable university credits
  • Free lunches and field trips for students
  • Language acquisition will come naturally to the students as a result of their participation in the fun, immersion based activities
  • Students will experience a wide variety of cultural activiites such as Chinese calligraphy, Chinese crafts and Chinese Folk music
  • More advanced students will be challenged to enhance their language skills through a more intensive level of interaction with their teachers
